that's a 'legacy effect'.

Seattle and Baltimore traditionally have good defenses. This year, they're both more middle of the pack than dominant.

KC had a shite defense for a couple of years preceded by a few years of mediocre play. Therefore the narrative is: Chiefs defense sucks.

I think it's pretty clear that the new staff and new additions are making a positive impact and that the defense is getting better. Sometimes it's one step up and two steps back, but still over the long view, we're clearly better than last year.
