Carmax seems overpriced - do you haggle them?

Jut started looking for a third family car the teens can drive and ding up.

Looking at 2008 Honda civic 4-door with around 100,000 miles.

There's a few on craigslist from private parties and independent dealers for around $6,000. Car max wants $9,999 for a very similar/same car with similar options.

Their "no haggle price." I thought they were supposed to be a good deal.

What gives?

It is not a tactic. We actually do leave if the dealer doesn't want to come down on price. No harm to anyone. We feel that we don't have to have that vehicle and won't be bent over like car salespeople like to do.

When I bought my truck, the Briggs people actually chased out after us and practically begged us to come back in and talk more. And they did give us what we felt was a good price. We settled for $250 more than what we originally offered. They settled for $3750 off the sticker price of $21,000. But you keep making fun of it.

Maybe if you are dealing with suckers. I never step foot on a car lot without knowing the actual out the door price. Any BS from sales people and I just leave.

Had a sales manager try to stand in a doorway to block me from leaving once after I told them I was leaving. It was Mike Steven Volkswagen in Wichita. I just grabbed him by the arms and moved him out of the way. Dude was shocked. I wonder how many people they've bullied into buying a car they didn't really want.

It IS a tactic. Any one can leave at any time. IF both parties work together, a deal is made. IF there is room to come down, I will. If not, I will look for a reason to simply move the vehicle. "If it makes sense, you should do it. If it doesn't make sense, I wouldn't expect you to do it!"

Either a customer works with me or they don't. I know there are other vehicles out there. "I know you can walk. No reason to play the game. Let's work on the numbers..not threaten each other."

And the good salesmen don't "bend" a customer over. Unless she asks.. After the sale.. New cars/trucks are 0 profit. It's usually an exercise in how little you lose. Used vehicles MAY have a decent profit. But there is a reason why. We bought it way cheap, or..sometimes, it is a special vehicle. But no one will logically spend more for one here than they can buy else where. A deal has to make sense to all involved. And Briggs is an industry joke.

As a common courtesy, I won't do anything to my customers that I wouldn't have done to me. God help a manager trying to physically keep me in a room. Things would get ugly! So. I would NEVER do that to a customer.
