Carmax seems overpriced - do you haggle them?

Jut started looking for a third family car the teens can drive and ding up.

Looking at 2008 Honda civic 4-door with around 100,000 miles.

There's a few on craigslist from private parties and independent dealers for around $6,000. Car max wants $9,999 for a very similar/same car with similar options.

Their "no haggle price." I thought they were supposed to be a good deal.

What gives?

One thing I noticed when looking at cars was that their price usually started higher than a lot of other dealers that did "allow" haggling. So I stayed away from them except for once.

I was looking for a somewhat limited car at the time, and they had one. There were others, but a bit further away. I showed the salesperson that they were by far the highest price, and asked them if they could come down a bit. Hard no. I said "you would rather me leave than offer anything?" He just said the prices were set and there was nothing he could do. I left and never considered them again. If I see a "Carmax" logo on the back of someone's car, I immediately decide that person is a sucker.

Alot of it depends on what they allowed on trade. If they allowed too much dealers won't haggle on it.

I’ve bought my last 2 cars from them. First was a 2008 328i 2 door. It was over 40K new and I got it for 21K with 19,000 miles, 100,000 mile warranty. Current is a 2017 eco boost mustang. It had 28,000 miles on it, 22K with 100,000 mile warranty.

I have used the warranty on both and always had a rental car by the end of the day they pay for. Yea I could have gotten a better price but I had it all setup to where I was in the office for maybe 2 hours and I was out the door in my new car. You pay for the convince.

No trade involved.

And even if it was, it wouldn't be discussed until after the price for the new car was set.

Carmax sticks by the "no haggle", even when being showed the same car with lower prices nearby.

Jesus Christ. 2 hours?

I’ve bought 3 new vehicles the last 2 years and probably spent 1 hour total in the dealership.

Must be some stupid people that buy there then. Like I said, theres always room unless they allowed the previous person too much on the trade for that vehicle.

I always lay my price down and have to threaten to walk out or even walk out. It's part of the process, would rather haggle than overpay at least grossly.

Take a look at rental car companies like Enterprise, who sell their cars after a year or two with 30-50k Mi, with limited warranties.

I found these to be of very good quality and better prices.

Good luck.

I've never heard of someone really trying to push them on a price, but that's a pretty small sample size.

Back in 2006 we bought a 2005 Dakota truck from them. They will not haggle. They claim the "price is their lowest price they can go".....the only reason we bought the truck was because they WERE lower than any other dealer.

Thats my tactic, I walk in and say this is what I want this is what I want to pay, Its a yes or no deal. Don't wast my time and I won't waste yours.
Of course they want to get out the pen and paper and say what do you want to pay per month? My answer is always 0. They bring in the sales manager and again I tell them This what I want and this is what I am willing to pay. Yes or No?

Its worked a couple of times. I always think I am offering a fair price.

I do that over the phone or via text.

Besides, the dealerships I deal with know I know my shit when it comes to money/prices. They come at me with their best shot right off because they know I’m not messing around with the dance.
