All of this happens in America on a daily basis. There's a risk going on vacation to any country. DR is overall pretty safe when compared to most Latin American countries.

I dunno.....I've been to several down there and honestly it depends where you are in said country..

I've been to Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, Cozumel, Cayman Islands....in no way shape or form are you gonna convince me that DR is safer than the Cayman Islands.

Well yeah there are certainly countries that are safer. DR is pretty violent in certain areas but Jamaica has a higher murder rate as does Honduras. Not sure about Beliza but pretty sure that country does too.

Man, I just don't agree.

I mean let's not forget that the DR is a whole damn country. Yes, like ANY country it has it's places you don't want to be.

But when I was down there we left resort and went all around the island (non-Haiti division) and I felt far safer than I've felt off-resort in Mexico.

I mean yeah - it's a 3rd world(ish) nation; what I believe you would call a 'developing country'. It's not all wine and roses. But as far as Latin America goes, I found it to be much better than just about anywhere else I've been down there.

Comparing it to Haiti is just completely ridiculous. It's...Costa Rica. It's Jamaica. It's not Haiti or Colombia or Venezuela. If you aren't going to be comfortable visiting DR, I'd suggest you probably shouldn't visit ANYWHERE in Latin America because the DR is pretty damn nice compared to most anyplace else down there.

South of the river in Belize City is an absolute no-go zone - at least from everyone I talked to on my trip. The Cayes are fine though.

San Ignacio on the Belize mainland (close to Guatemala border) was one of the pleasant surprises of my trip.
