That would be true in any city.

More or less if you grow up in the state you cheer for the flagship school unless there's a family connection or you go to a rival school or something.

I wonder why people take him seriously. The shtick is painfully obvious. I've grown tired of it and find myself listening to Cowherd and SVP podcasts in the afternoons now. Just trading one shtick for another but still.

I definitely think they would have won the North which Mizzou did twice. I'm not sure that is an actual thing you get a trophy for but no matter. It isn't going to be easy for WVU to rise up and win this 10 team league. I think they got a bit of a rude awakening this last season.

If I had my pick I would have MU if anything to keep the 110 year old rivalry with KU intact but that ship has sailed. Now as a fan I just want to beat them.
Pfft. WV and TCU both got a rude awakening. No more playing a 2 game league slate and slipping into a coma for the other 6 and cruising to 11 wins.

Same thing happened to Utah.

You sure? I'd say the South has a far more captive audience for college sports than the rust belt does. There isn't much of any NFL presence down there. We'll see what the new SEC tv deal turns out to be. I'd guess it'll surpass the Big 10 by a comfortable margin and that'll answer the debate.
I think you're right and I'll go you one further as it pertains to the on field product.

I very much view the Big Ten as a slowly dying league. To be successful on an elite level in college football you need ties into one of the three anchor states, Fla, Tx, or Cali. Take that and trending population shifting from the rust belt to the sun belt and you have a league that's slowly slipping further and further behind the SEC, Big XII, and PAC 12.

Which is why they made a desperate play for Rutgers. They are smoking crack if they think they're really going to make up their demographic deficit by getting the NYC market with those slugs. But then, I'm sure their consultants know much more about the data than I do. From the appearance however, the BIG looked desperate and this move will backfire.

Don't their current members like Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota get sick and tired of seeing their brand diluted with the 2 adds, and talk of schools like VA or GT? I'd be pretty irked.

It's not going to help them get players. Those kids all play hoops up there.

Rutgers is a terrible add.
I can't imagine their current members are all that thrilled but then again they had to vote on it right?

Rutgers isn't a horrible add at all. For one the Big Ten schools recruit New Jersey hard. And second and the most important reason is they get .80 per cable household in the state of New Jersey for the Big Ten Network. $$$$$$$. Not to mention the big dogs (Ohio St, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska) now get a game in the NYC market. More $$$$$.

It was a lot simpler than that: they felt the league was too unstable. They didn't know what we know now about the Fox contract or the GOR. Boren was trying to escape to the PAC. It really wasn't a hard choice at all, nor did it really require any fan pressure. The admins had an easy decision.

Yes everybody knows why they were added (cable subs).

Got nothin' to do w/ recruiting. Them 'n the ACC already rape that state yearly. Rutgers probably doesn't keep more than 1 or 2 of it's top players most years.

It's an awful football program. Makes Mizzou look like a blue blood by comparison and their hoops aren't any better. State of probably 8 or 9 million people and they generate so much local interest they play home games in a juco stadium. They actually managed to take their crap product and dilute it further with the Scarlet Knights and Maryland.

I always hate it when people start out a post like that, you know, you're probably not going to like it!

I felt, in the aftermath of it all, that Mizzou made the ONLY choice it could, not necessarily the right one. I think the pressure, both internally and externally made coming back to the B12 impossible. The fans would have flailed the administration if they said they were going to remain in the B12, and in all likelihood, never (that might be too exclusionary) would have gained the trust and respect back from the other B12 members.

On the flip side, though, outside of a possible basketball title every now and then, Missouri is never going to have the same kind of athletic possibilities it might have had in the B12. Only the faintest of pipe dreams thinks Mizzou will be a factor more than once a decade in football. The overall program might be better, or the same as it was at its recent height in the B12, but it won't be good enough to compete at the top in the SEC, like it might have in the B12.

That doesn't mean SEC membership doesn't have other benefits, like the stability factor, but from a purely competitive athletics level, in the men's revenue sports, I think Mizzou really hurt its chances at decent bowl games and final records. Its out of its element culturally, and thus also at a disadvantage in recruiting.

Is that a fair assessment or am I way off base. SEC wasn't necessarily the right choice, but it was the only choice, and being the only choice, it wasn't anywhere near a bad deal.
I see how you might see things that way, but I disagree. The SEC opens up doors for us that would never be available in the Big 12. It's simply a matter of taking advantage. The best players pick SEC schools disproportionately more than other schools. SEC schools get their pick of the best coaches. Just look at Arkansas. No coach is going to make a move like that to coach in the Big 12.

The Big 12 is at a crossroad. Nebraska is the most successful football program in Big 12 history. They are gone, and they are glad to be gone. Oklahoma is the second most successful, and they have been on a gradual decline for several years. Texas is third, and their decline has been more pronounced. KSU is fourth, and they have experienced nothing but futility outside the Snyder era. West Virginia has some recent success, but they look like shit in a real conference...same with TCU. Oklahoma State and Baylor have made a little noise recently, but both were very average this year. Iowa State is Iowa State, and Kansas is Kansas.

Nobody is clamoring to play in the Big 12. There's simply no status boost like there is playing in the SEC. The SEC allure is very real, and the fans understand and embrace it. It pisses off the rest of the country, but SEC fans don't care because they have scoreboard overe every other conference combined.

A week or so ago, I wrote about what I think is the inevitable future basketball dominance of the SEC as well. If you think people hate the SEC now, you haven't seen anything yet.

One would assume that KU's basketball success captured more "fans" throughout the 80's and 90's when Mizzou was down. It's fine either way. People should be a fan of whoever they like.
Yeah, got any proof for that load of bullshit? Let's see these "numbers"
