KC Star: Fans’ frustration bubbles into boil
JEFFREY FLANAGAN SOUND BITES Fans’ frustration bubbles into boil Can it get any worse than that? Losing to the lowly Raiders at home? There’s going to be some serious anger in the Chiefs’ kingdom this week. ••• “That’s a bad spot!” | Bob Gretz, Chiefs Radio Network, before the controversial challenge by Herm Edwards in the fourth quarter. “It’s a double hit. They took the timeout to discuss the fourth down. They challenge and lose another timeout.” | Ian Eagle, CBS play-by-play man. “Whoa. You better get a first down here and save your coach from a poor decision.” | Solomon Wilcots, CBS analyst. JF: The Chiefs’ coaching staff whiffed when it mattered most, wasting the timeouts and then coming up with a predictable play call on fourth and 1 late in the game. Guess we should be used to that by now. ••• “The game is on the line. They have to step up!” | Mitch Holthus, Chiefs Radio Network, urging the Chiefs’ defense to make a stand in the final 3 minutes. JF: The Chiefs’ defenders did not respond, perhaps because Edwards has been leaning on them all season like they’re the ’85 Bears. “When they needed yardage, where did they go? Tamba Hali.” | Len Dawson, Chiefs Radio Network, on where the Raiders ran when they needed yards. ••• “Get focused on this thing! This is the game!” | Dawson, after Chiefs tight end Jason Dunn committed a false-start penalty, coming out of a timeout no less, in the fourth quarter. ••• “Oh, and (Dave) Rayner missed it badly.” | Eagle, on Rayner’s horrible field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter. ••• “That was the best protection of the day for Brodie Croyle.” | Holthus “Yeah, and it wasn’t even that good.” | Dawson JF: The Chiefs, indeed, got beat up front, offensively and defensively. ••• “Why would you pooch kick there?” | Dawson, after the Raiders pooched a kickoff that allowed the Chiefs great field position. JF: Maybe that was just a leftover pooch kick from Saturday night, when MU and KU may have set an NCAA record for pooch kicks. ••• “What do you think the runner is going to do? Run out of bounds? No, he’s going to cut back in.” | Dawson, in absolute disbelief, after Oakland’s LaMont Jordan ran for a 5-yard touchdown. JF: On a sweep right, Jordan gave the impression he might throw a halfback pass. That froze every Chiefs defender and they strangely, and comically, remained frozen and allowed Jordan to simply walk into the end zone. ••• “You’re just asking too much of the defense, all the time. You got to get some help from the offense!” | Gretz ••• “Has Mitch got a nickname for Kolby Smith yet? Is he calling him ‘Pegasus?’ ” | From the press box JF: Can you have Pegasus and Centaur on the same team? ••• “That’s what Herm is talking about. Be patient. Don’t do something you’re not capable of doing.” | Dawson, after the Chiefs, facing a first and 20, called three straight draw plays. JF: The crowd rained boos on the play calling and rightfully so. First and 20 isn’t impossible. You have to at least try. ••• “This is one unhappy crowd.” | Holthus, as Chiefs fans filed out of Arrowhead, booing all the way. ••• “You had a nice career. … I know you reinvented yourself. … But it’s time for you to go.” | Angry Chiefs fan to Jack Harry on WHB’s postgame call-in show. “Hey, you’re entitled to your opinion. … When it’s time to go, I’ll go. I’m sure I’ll know before anyone else.” | Harry JF: This was a classic case of an irate Chiefs fan firing out some misdirected anger at the media. Harry took it in stride, which is what we’re paid to do. But here’s hoping Harry hangs around for a while — he sure is entertaining. Next week.....kick that up a notch.
I'd like to see some paper bags on heads in thoughts of the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".... "RUN" "RUN" "PASS" "PUNT" and eye holes. IT would be even better if it were the superfans.... If I went I think I'd take a "DANGER! TEAM IN DANGER OF SCORING! PUNT NOW! BEFORE ITS TOO LATE, HERM Sign. |
