Texas DE Charles Omenihu

MOBILE, Ala. — Missouri quarterback Drew Lock didn’t hesitate when asked which NFL draft prospect at the Senior Bowl (quarterbacks excluded) has impressed him most this week.

“I mean, the Texas defensive end has hit me multiple times in my life,” Lock said of the Longhorns' Charles Omenihu. “Yeah. He’s a pretty good ballplayer.”

Lock would know.

He remembers how Omenihu capped off the Texas’ 33-16 bowl win over Missouri in 2017. Omenihu exploded off the line of scrimmage with 17 seconds left to play, beating right tackle Paul Adams, downing Lock and sending the ball flying into a Texas teammate’s hands.

“A good way to end my junior year,” Omenihu told USA TODAY Sports Wednesday night from the Senior Bowl. “Dude got swag, you know what I’m saying. But I did get to him.”

And to hear the highly touted quarterback, now his teammate at the Senior Bowl, peg Omenihu as a standout?

“Really?” Omenihu asked, his eyes widening when told. “Oh my — man! That boy Drew Lock is onto something.”

Draft analysts agreed.

Omenihu secured his Senior Bowl invite after registering 45 tackles, 18 for loss and 9.5 sacks en route to Big 12 defensive lineman of the year honors. Through 50 games and 32 starts in four years, Omenihu claimed 116 tackles, 30.5 for loss and 17 sacks. His numbers improved steadily each year.

Since arriving in Mobile, he’s turned heads with a power one-on-one rep against Wisconsin tackle Michael Deiter, more disruption on inside run drills and a weigh-in broadcasting his seven-foot-long wingspan.

Omenihu’s 36.5-inch-long arms were reportedly the longest at the Senior Bowl since Seattle Seahawks guard D.J. Fluker hit 36.75 in 2013.

Now, Omenihu looks to translate these flashes of a high ceiling into a more unified force.

“When I’m consistent, I think it’s dominant,” Omenihu said. “When I’m not, it’s average. So I feel like I’m two-tooling myself to make me understand that.”

He’s also spending his week honing versatility under Oakland Raiders coaches on the North team. (The San Francisco 49ers are coaching the South.) The more Omenihu meets with teams at the Senior Bowl, the more he realizes front offices envision him rushing from both the edge and inside.

Omenihu also realizes that despite trending in the right direction and turning heads (yes, even the head of Drew Lock, whom he once sacked), he’s far from a finished product.

Omenihu turned to Raiders defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley when asked by USA TODAY Sports to assess his practices.

“Why don’t we ask him so I can give you the truth?” Omenihu said, grabbing Ansley. “Coach, how do you think my week is going so far?”

“Man, horrible,” Ansley replied in jest as he and Omenihu crossed a sky bridge over a dark and stormy Mobile night. “Horrible that guy!”

Then Ansley settled in.

“He ain’t no superstar,” Ansley said. “But he’s working to it.”

That seemed to be the general consensus prior to the Senior Bowl. Wonder how much his stock rose after the game....

I really like Omenihu is we can get him on day two...especially if we let go of Ford.

If he tests well at the Combine I could easily see a team fall in love with him and take him in the first round. He's starting to get a lot of comps to having a rise similar to Marcus Davenport last year.
