Why would a rogue owner rig/influence games for betting purposes? They have too much to lose if they get caught. It makes no sense.

Heh. I had a friend who worked for an off-shore hedge fund manager. The hedge fund manager had worked himself up from a personal worth of literally $0 to about 30 million (at the time I knew him) over the course of about a decade. He took work with him on every vacation and lived with terrible stress.

At one point, my friend asked the hedge fund manager, "What would you do if you had literally half the money in the world?"

Hedge fund manager response, "Go for the other half."

Owners of sports franchises have a history of messing up,take a look at the list below and see how many make sense.
