Alex Smith to ask for release

http://tracking.si.com/2013/01/28/al...?sct=obnetwork

If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in?

Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp.

That's a complete waste.

The reason you haven't heard Campbell's name yet is because he's going to be a free agent and free agency hasn't started.
this argument assumes that the quarterback drafted number one overall is actually able to start mid season or before and be successful. That is a big assumption that has made fools out of many franchises and put them back years when the guy they took didn't pan out (Leinert, Akili Smith, Jamarcus Russell, David Carr, etc.) I know not all those guys were drafted first overall, but they were all drafted very high and failed. Without a guy that is a capable qb already on the roster, you are forced to put a non ready rookie in the games. I just don't like it.

It's not an Alex Smith thing for me, its a "need a guy that can play" thing for me.

I want to draft Geno number 1. But Id take Alex Smith. Smith has turned into a far better QB than Cassel with a good QB coach. He can throw to win games. He did it against New Orleans in the playoff game. Cassel could never do it. He had one of the greatest offenses and couldnt get the Pats to the playoffs. Smith for 2 years while Reid finds and grooms his QB would be fine

No, all we know is that he asked for his outright release (not to be traded). Is that a big red flag? No. Is it a red flag? Absolutely. And there will be guys out there that don't have any.

Mentorship is overrated. And as far as being a backup, WINNING is overrated. He MIGHT see the field 1 or 2 times during the season.

For a backup QB you need a guy that's 1) cheap and 2) serviceable.

Alex Smith doesn't really fit either of those bills.

It doesn't matter if the #1 overall guy is able to start or not. The simple fact of the matter is that HE WILL.

Blaine Gabbert started his rookie season and he wasn't anywhere near ready. Be prepared because a #1 draft pick WILL start, whether he's ready or not.

And if you're in the "need a guy that can play" camp, you're with me. Alex Smith is overkill.

Dude, there are stories out there form SB week, where Harbaugh is talking about what a model teammate he has been and how he is with Kapernick.

Mentorship and coaching is not overrrated. In fact, its going to be needed badly with a young rookie QB.

If he is traded, he has no choice and he has shown that he is a good teamamte under shitty circumstances. As an FA, he has mor power, but traded. Not so much.

To me, Geno Smith/Alex Smith is an either/or situation.

That's just the reality of the modern NFL. If they bring Alex Smith in here, he will be the starter. Period.

We won't be drafting a QB high and having a "competition". That is a coach-speak-fueled fantasy.

You are assuming things. based on your feelings about the matter. If he was a problem, they wouldnt say anything, or barely anything anyways. there hasnt been one story out of SF this yea about a problem with Smith. It would of come out by now.

The dude spent years trying to get to this point. If you think he's gonna come here to be a backup to a #1 pick and just be happy about it, I don't know what to tell you. It's not gonna happen.

This.

I'd rather us draft Geno with the first pick and sign a QB like Drew Stanton or Matt Moore.

Matt Flynn was never a full-time starter, let alone a QB that led his team to the cusp of a Super Bowl.

Not even close to a valid comparison.

Smith said ALL LAST SUMMER that he wasn't happy. And he was still technically the starter at that time.

here's the deal. Even if Alex Smith becomes a free agent, who is going to sign him? A team without a QB. Now, that really boils down to Arizona, KC, Oakland, Tampa (if they let Freeman walk), Buffalo, or NY Jets. If you don't think the GM of each of those teams wouldn't still draft a QB, then you are nuts. Nobody is going to give him the reins without having a guy to develop as well. Then, he could be Matt Flynn all over again.
