2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I've actually heard Miller has lost some velo this year, thus his struggles. Goldstein said it was probably time to start worrying a bit if you're a Cardinal fan.

Shelby Miller? Cards want to give up on him, I thought he was part of the 4 Cy Young Winners that they were going to start.

I don't have much of any up-to-date knowledge of Miller, so I should preface all of my comments with that admission.

For me, moving Collins would be a priority because I simply don't think he has too many productive years ahead of him at the ML level. Just too damn small with a pretty violent delivery. Not all arm, but violent with his entire body.

He will break down sooner than the average bear, so I'd like to maximize the return, whatever that might be.

Yeah. And for a guy like Shelby Miller, who has true ace potential, hell yes. He's scuffling at AAA a bit, but the stuff is still there.

I have seen some weird stuff from the Cards' GM regarding Miller. Basically calling him out in the media and saying he isn't listening to them/has falled in their minds as a prospect far behind Taveras, Martinez and Wong.

Simiar to the way he and La Russa ran down Rasmus in the media before trading him. Do they just not care about deflating players' value before they trade them or what?

From what I've read and watched, Miller doesn't have that true ace potential you speak of anymore. He's lost 4 or 5 mph velocity this season, which as you know is a huge deal.

He hasn't developed any secondary pitches to a level they need to be at this point either.

Might be a situation where it's wise to buy now with 2013-14 in mind, rather than wait for the FA period and all hell to break loose.

If we could secure a Garza now, with confidence we could work out an extension, we're now in a position of power going into the off-season.

He skipped a start back in June and has regained his velocity since then. He's gotten shelled in two starts since, but the velocity is back.

I don't think his velocity is quite back to where it once was, but I did hear it was slightly back up.

Cards fans are perfectly willing to trade Shelby Miller. I'd be leary.

Report I saw a week or so ago had him sitting back at 93-94. That's where he's been in the past, with the ability to touch 97-98 when he needs it.

His curve and change were already considered advanced by most scouts last year. One-pitch guys don't get ranked in the top 10 by every organization.

I'd sure as hell take the flyer on him. I'd give up Collins and Crow without blinking. And I'd give up more than that, too.
