edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Besides the fact that the game isn't being moved, the players and coaches want to play the game, there is no reason why the NFL would move this game beyond the end of the season.

I'd like to have seen the game postponed until Jan 3rd. It's a Thursday night, after the regular season is scheduled to end. Right before Wildcard Weekend.

You can put it on NFL network, making it a national game and collecting more money than if it were just two local markets. It doesn't displace any other network scheduling. The NFL could share that revenue with whatever network was set to run the game. It doesn't split the MNF viewership.

And the city and the players can focus on healing or moving forward or being with family or resting or whatever they need most for the next few days.

Not a bad idea really. And the nfl marketing geniuses can spin it for more green in the wallets of network execs and owners. just messing with you, really it's not a bad idea. But I can relate to the idea of some players wanting to play. It's what they do, and sometimes work (if you enjoy your job anyway) can be therapeutic to dealing with life's curveballs.

You came in here like an expert telling us that postponements can't happen because it's too complex with all the deals in place. It's been pretty comprehensively demonstrated to you that when the NFL needs to postpone, it can be done. Since, y'know it has been friggen done. Since then you've done nothing but talk sideways in order to avoid looking like you're entirely full of shit.

The evidence suggests that the NFL can postpone a game when the powers-that-be deem it appropriate. Clearly they don't deem it appropriate in this case and I'm not any more surprised by that than you are.
