2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Jason Parks is my favorite minor league guy. By far. Now that Kevin Goldstein works in baseball, anyway.

And he just posted this at Baseball Pro:

'Secondly, and most importantly from a scouting standpoint, Myers doesn’t project to be a superstar, at least as far as I’m concerned. Again, highly skilled and one hell of a prospect, but the offensive tools aren’t so crazy that Myers was considered untouchable or a slam-dunk MVP candidate at the highest level. A realistic projection might peg him as a first-division talent or perhaps as an All-Star in his peak years. The tools aren’t so loud or the holes not so small, however, that Myers will develop into the next Mike Trout or hit the ball so hard and so often that he can cure incurable diseases with his offensive stroke. He’s ripe with new-car smell and his sticker price is through the roof, but the reality is that Wil Myers is more likely to be a major league regular than he is a superstar.'

So, basically, the guy that I respect more than anyone when it comes to minor league scouting just said the prospect I love - which made me hate this trade - is not a sure-fire superstar. That he's more likely to be Matt Joyce than Ryan Braun.

I think I'm going to call it a night and go to bed with THAT positivity flowing...

I would get angry, but it's the ****ing Royals. Unless, Ewing Kauffman rises from his grave we are ****ed forever.

KC really shits on great sports fans. Both of these ****ing teams are testing me on a weekly basis.

I'm thankful I had a real sports team fall into my ****ing lap.

I'll just keep hoping someone that knows WTF they are doing gets involved with these hopeless organizations.

Because apparently the mounds of evidence in this thread deriding this deal aren't enough explanation on why it's a bad trade, let me ask you this:

The Rays have proven to be a "winning team" the last few years, right? Why do you suppose they were then willing to make this deal?

Fans of this team were asking the team to spend money on Sanchez, not agree to terms with Hoch, not trade Myers and win with that group and have Myers under team control for 6+ years.

I have to admit here's a part of me that's just kind of giving out a stunned "holy shit, they're actually trying to win" buzz over all this. I don't care enough about baseball these days to think much more deeply than that. I certainly didn't expect them to spend so much effort on the starting rotation. And I don't know what I'm going to do now, I'm so used to crap like Bruce Chen being the de facto #1 and wondering constantly why Hochevar is still out there (assuming, of course, he's the odd man out of the rotation now). This feels different somehow. Weird.

I shoulda gone to bed...

Dutton says Hochevar more likely to make rotation than Chen. Which DEFIES ALL LOGIC BUT SO DOES EVERYTHING ELSE DAYTON MOORE DOES RELATED TO LUKE HOCHEVAR

Myers' 130 strikeouts against AAA pitching was always a concern of mine, not saying he won't be a stud, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had one or two rough years before figuring it out.

I think we are all just in shock that they are putting all the chips down and trying to win this year. I would rather have proven MLB talent than prospects. I am tired of prospects. Prospects come up, often fail, and the cycle of losing continues. MLB talent gives us a chance to win now, and frankly I couldn't be more excited. Sad to see Odo go in the deal though.

I don't see much evidence, just butthurt Royals fans that can't grasp reality.

The Rays made this deal for the same reason the Royals usually make this deal. They can't afford to re-sign anyone and get what they can for them. Of the pitchers that were mentioned in trade talks for Myers, (Shields, Lester, Dickey, Anderson) Shields is clearly the best.

Do you really think the Yankees, Red Sox or Cardinals fans would think making their rotation better was a bad thing at the cost of guys who have 0 games played in the majors?

They still have Duffy, Lamb, Ventura, Zimmer, Starling, Bonifacio, Mondesi among other in the minors.

If the Cardinals would have traded Oscar Taveras for James Shields, I'd have lost my shit.

Don't try to make this a 'winners vs. losers' discussion because that's not what it is. It's a 'smart organization vs. stupid organization' discussion.
