Evaluate the Defense Game #1

I thought they looked improved from several aspects. Keep in mind this was Jax and not a high-powered offense.

Tackling = Much, MUCH better

Coverage = Tighter. Few plays without a defender right on the WR

Run Defense = Stellar start, let's not get cocky

Pass Defense = Not a ton of pressure today. Missed a huge sack which ended up leading to a TD. Coverage overall was decent. Made a backup look all-world but that happens when a backup comes in mid-game.

Overall it looked like we were more sound fundamentally. Run gaps were getting filled, screens were getting blown up and not a ton of YAC. Hopefully as the season progresses our defense will as well.

Overall grade today: C+

The thing with defending the run is you have to consistently do it as a unit. You can't be guessing and jumping gaps cause you leave guys out to dry.

That's what they did last year. We saw how that worked out.

I didn't wanna say that, but that guy was everywhere.

Some smart teams will bait him and throw over the top but he's super smart, he'll be fine.

Remember last season when that would've been Ron Parker? I mean this in the most clinical, matter of fact way possible - Parker would've been standing at the 25 yard line waiting to see what happened. You know he would've. That's all he ever did in run support, he'd wait to see if the first line took care of it and if there was a LB flying in to clean up, he'd stay out of the fray altogether. The only time he'd engage was when the first guy missed and there was no help to be found.

Damn he was frustrating to watch.

That's actually what happened on that deep ball against Ward.

They had 3 guys covering the underneath receiver. Thornhill bit.

He's gonna do that. It's awfully risky putting him out there in single-high when you know how aggressive he is, especially with how green he is. I hadn't noticed it in watching the play but that makes a lot more sense than "Hey Ward - you have man coverage with no help over the top. Good luck..."

May be better served having him and Mathieu flip responsibilities in that I think HB will be less inclined to bite hard on those double moves or play-action fakes. But long-term I think that's where you want Thornhill so I guess you just live with the growing pains while you're playing these rummies.

If he's gonna take lumps, I guess he needs to take them now to learn from them.

I think you just take them now, against these shitbirds in the hopes that by the back half of the season he's flying high.

Apparently they love him in the building, Terez even mentioned that they see him in the Earl Thomas type player breath, which if that worked out even a little bit I'd be excited.

See, we can get guys like that in the 2nd, lets start burning those first rounders away even more.

I don't think there was a double move at all. I actually think once the backup got in, Spags told them to jump short routes to try and get picks.

Ward got burned, but you see Thornhill jumping this open guy.

Later on I think it was Breeland did the same thing and they had a guy get open deep down the right sideline.

If that's C2, isn't Breeland supposed to pass that guy off or is he supposed to keep dropping? **** if I remember.

The first one Thornhill just guessed wrong I think.

Yeah, I thought he jumped the play-fake on that but turns out he just locked onto the wrong dude.

Ward clearly didn't have a good day but sometimes you get bailed out on a play like that deep ball; that's kinda the point in having a deep safety. If he has deep help, the ball probably doesn't even get thrown.

Granted, he had a chance to bail out his teammate there (knock it away and Thornhill's error means nothing) and didn't, so it's not like he's without blame. But he had to feel hung out to dry there a bit.

The thing about that play is, I think they executed it fairly well.

The blitz got there, and Minshew had to fit the ball into a fairly tight window.

He's good.

It's why it's kinda hard and a bit pointless for us as fans to try and really break down some of this stuff.
It's just impossible to know without knowing the playcall and such.

Hard to keep track of shit like that sometimes.

Is that 2nd play more of a cover 3 over?

Eh, **** if I know. It doesn't look like a strict cover 2 because Breeland is getting deeper in his drop than I would generally expect from a cover 2. Cover 3 over makes more sense because he takes him into his deep 1/3 with the help over the top to pick up.

But terminology changes around so much that I could've just mangled the hell out of that. Coverage has gotten a lot more complicated in response to RPOs and option routes than I've ever had any kind of coaching in. A lot of it's gotten over my head at this point.
