Where comedy has gone today...

I don't agree with all comments in this vid but I do agree with his takes (and only his takes) on comedy.

Comedy should always be pushing the bubble of society and making us look at things we don't normally look at.

I'd say liberal or conservative but I can only think of 1 comic out of the 4 I know of that are conservative and actually funny while not accused of rape or sexual assault.

Conservative comics are like women - they just suck at it.

I dare anyone to watch the Patrice clip and not laugh while he explains the Angry Pirate.

I don't know if anyone has watched the entire Nanette special, but her premise is that pain is no longer funny.

It's a long journey from Michael Valentine Smith observing [as a 'stranger in a strange land'] that "I grok people. I am people… so now I can say it in people talk. I've found out why people laugh. They laugh because it hurts so much… because it's the only thing that'll make it stop hurting."

For a while now, there has been a quiet pressure in the standup community to only 'punch up' with your criticism. That is, never try to create comedy by observing the downtrodden. It only trods them further down. Creat comedy by satirizing the powerful if you must satirize. Otherwise, just be jovially uncritical.

Hannah goes one further to propose that self-deprecation is humiliation. That, in order to find humor in your pains and failings, one must relive one's failings and pains in silence for the amusement of others. You smooth off the painful edges for comedy, but the painful edges are still there for you, the performer. And it's a form of masochism.

I'm not surprised that someone would come along and say humor is pain.

Humor IS pain, but it's a way of productively processing pain.

Difference is, Hannah is questioning the productivity of processing pain through humor.

Outside of puns, humor is almost exclusively some form of pain or potential pain. Slapstick, miscommunication, uncomfortable situations, unacknowledged danger, suberted expecations, and on and on.

From the explicit golf ball to the groin, to the most subtle of comedy, . . say where one party to a conversation is unaware that the rest are talking about something else, like gay code, it's all about pain, pending pain or the danger of pain averted.

Usually the pain is processed by the parties to the humor emerging on the other side of the punchline relatively unscathed. It reinforces our resilience.

Humor is an escape from pain. A workaround to cope with suffering.

If pain is the fire, humor is the fire department. Hannah's premise is that the fire department is responsible for the fire.

Perhaps that analogy will get across the point I'm failing to make and explain why I find her position ridiculous.

I don't think we're that far apart, but I think I have explaining to do.

Humor is escape from pain because it's the observation OF pain in a way that distills the pathos out of it and demonstrates our ability to cope with it.

Traditional sitcom families argue with each other every episode and hug it out right before the credits.

America's Funniest Videos has all sorts of physical pain and pratfalls, but we assume everyone survived and are OK with people watching and laughing.

Miscommunication humor presents the possibility of embarassment and loss of dignity, but by the punchline everyone's still OK.

Hannah is too delicate to take stock of her experiences and turn it into entertainment. Instead of healing from her craft, she feels it reopens her wounds anew.

She's like the person who takes a pie to the face who, every time she remembers it, waves of fresh humiliation wash over her as if it just happened again.

In support of your explanation, I think it's no coincidence that the general body of comedy is plagued with depression, substance abuse, suicide, and early death.

Robin Williams, Greg Giraldo, John Pinette, Raphie May, Patrice O'Neal, Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedberg, Chris Farley, John Belushi...the list goes on, to say nothing of the countless comedians who continue to live despite their best efforts.

I think you're lumping a lot of things in there to pad the list.

No he wouldn't because he is French and the French are liberals so he would have gotten a free pass, especially from the media.
