Where comedy has gone today...

I don't agree with all comments in this vid but I do agree with his takes (and only his takes) on comedy.

Comedy should always be pushing the bubble of society and making us look at things we don't normally look at.

I'd say liberal or conservative but I can only think of 1 comic out of the 4 I know of that are conservative and actually funny while not accused of rape or sexual assault.

Conservative comics are like women - they just suck at it.

That's not malevolent. That's just a lack of talent.

Samantha Bee had a shit ton of segments just like that on The Daily Show [actually, like a cross between this, and that SNL recurring high school theater sketch].

Now she has topline writers, and although she's now a harridan, her wordsmithing reflects it.

I just skimmed much of the reading in here, but it seems to me that the "Humor is pain" crowd seems to be ignoring the reality that not all humor stems from negativity. Things can be funny and pleasant at the same time.

I didn't say negativity. I said pain.

Perhaps I am taking too expansive a conception of pain, but I do think that the concept holds up.

Pain doesn't have to be negative. It can just be perilous.

Think of Buster Keaton. His scenes are almost balletic in their beauty. But the comedy comes from the danger he wanders in and out of blithely.

Think of Edith on All in the Family. Archie treats her like a ditz, but she get off the best zingers and usually imparts the wisdom of the scene. They're a family on the PRECIPACE of hurt feelings and anger. But the way they handle it makes it humorous.

Think of the episode of Frasier where he spends the whole episode trying to set a new acquaintance with Daphne, only to find out at the end of the day that the acquaintance assumed that, not only was Frasier was gay and hitting on him, but that his brother and father were gay too. Again, nothing negative, just danger averted through a crafty narrative.

Again, the closest to falling entirely outside the concept of pain is puns.

EDIT: Even one of the most famous punchlines in the history of cinema. Perfectly pleasant, but in a way that you are pleased at all the pain averted.

Yes, and I would consider negativity to be even broader than pain, but neither encompass what humor is. They are just part of it.

Humor can be a funny looking position in Yoga. It can be a baby playing with a puppy. It can be jokes about great things your mom did or said. It can be confusing a stick and an insect. It can be a man turning on a light switch and seeing electric lights work for the first time.

Humor need not be from pain or negativity. But, as I said in the earlier post, I just skimmed a lot of the reading. So maybe I missed where humor like that was noted in some other manner.

Have you seen that series, ďThe Tragic Side of Comedy?Ē It really is crazy how many comedians use their comedy to mask and/or use as a coping mechanism to the inner turmoil they feel. When you find something funny or make someone laugh, that inner turmoil/pain momentarily goes away.

I think this Bo Burnham cat is funny as hell. My baby brothers got me into him. Very unique, bright mind.

I love his spoof of pop county.

Haven't seen it, but very few comedians I've seen (the good ones, anyway) seem to derive their comedy from the functional, happy, stable parts of life. Even family-friendly Jeff Foxworthy's material focuses on the struggle of "rednecks."

And, to WhiteWhale, the reason I include Patrice is because he fits the profile of a comedian who used his personal tragedies (didn't know his father, got robbed at gunpoint, went to jail on a questionable statutory rape charge, had trouble with women generally, suffered from depression, obesity and diabetes for years, and had trouble getting along in the industry) to make very relatable, real material.

Im trying to think of the comedians that I have seen that donít seem have that underlying emotional turmoil/pain.

Funny, I just wrote about this about an hour ago in the pet names thread, but Brooks Wheelan (SNL one season and standup) and his bros are personal friends of mine since 4th grade through wrestling and Dubuque shenanigans... (thatís where Brooks is from and I lived there for 5 years during college). All the Wheelans are very funny and very happy people...the funniest one is the bro who doesnít even try to be funny, Brett...his personality is just hilarious. Brooks is the youngest one. He was the smartest one (valedictorian, had some crazy major in college) and is the most analytical one. Sits back and thinks, listens to people, studies them, etc... he would have these fleeting moments that wouldnít last long where it seemed as if he was over-analyzing shit to the point where he would tap into something troubling to him. Just brief, little depressive mood swings that only lasted a few seconds...it appeared that way anyways. Of course, I noticed this the most when beer and weed were involved.

Bo Burnham seems to have a side to him that is troubled.

Gaffigan comes off as very happy to me, but who knows. His books, his specials. He seems happy.

Iím reading Kevin Hartís book... he had a weird upbringing...itís obvious he developed his sense of humor to cope with things.

Comedians have the distinguishment of being able to recite and abundance of truths and have it be socially acceptable because you know, itís a joke, no matter how dark and controversial what it is they tap into can be. And sometimes the truth, when you peel the comedic layers from it, ****ing sucks. And comedians tap into these truths, make light of them and recite them over 300 times a year. Maybe it takes a toll?

Itís been a few years, but I did a little comedy probably 3-10 years ago...whether it be writing stories or the occasional 5 minutes bit with Brooks (log before he made it). I have had a little success...the mullet guy being eaten by a shark in my avatar is me...and that mullet man has become a semi-famous meme. I use him as my blog mascot. Heís been posted on Jeepís website, Just Bassís Facebook page, a ton of political stuff, Monster Drinkís Facebook, etc. The mullet man shows up all the time...and itís me. You see it everywhere and the funny thing is, people think itís a real guy....lol and itís just me dressed in white trash get up, doing ridiculous white trash things that are an embellishment of the behavior in the common Iowa trailer park. True story: Iowanian (who lives 3-4 hours away from me) went to a gun shop in a small town and they had a picture of my mullet guy with a ďdonít be like this guy warning.Ē Iowanian was like, ďholy shit thatís rico.Ē Iíll have to attach that. I have always been the clown of my family. I can say with absolute certainty that I did this/developed this role in my family to address truths that in other atmospheres, itís politically incorrect to address, while casting a zany light on it and because pondering things that I think are funny and it makes me feel better thinking about it and making zany observations regarding them. I know I have dabbled in comedy at least partially to cope with my own inclinations of feeling inner turmoil. I know thereís a big difference between me and an actual successful comedian, but just saying...

I wouldnít say comedy is pain, but pain is a pretty big piece of the pie in many cases.

Attached, the mullet man meme that I see randomly the most along with the pic that Iowanian took for me when he went to the gun shop...itís funny that people think itís an actual person:
