The Thinking of Purchasing A Used Car Thread

I figured I’d create this thread rather than hunting down one of the old ones that are specific to a certain make/model.

anyone ever looking, or has, taken a classic car loan?

In the spring, I'm considering buying my brothers' 95 Z28 (yeah yeah...Camaro comments be damned ).
It's totally babied, and immaculate. The engine is strong, last time making about 400 HP. He's running naturally aspirated again after blowing a hole in a piston.....again. lol. He got tired of running it supercharged, so rebuilt it ....again. Premium parts.
he's running drag radials, and it has some Boyd Coddington wheels. He had it lowered a bit and the suspension upgraded as he was planning on doing some SCCA racing but life/kids took over time and $.

It's red on red; red lether, 25th Anniversary. Probably 25k miles.

He's looking at getting a bike in the spring possibly. He's had the car for a good 15 years; said he's looking to get $10k out of it. which I think is an excellent deal. Perfectly maintained. Hell, the engine alone is probably at least $5k.

IMO, you should only finance a car you need, not a car you want.

Looks like a fun car but unless you have time to baby it and a place to keep it (in a garage) I wouldn't buy it. If you do race it at SCCA events, that just time and $ as things like tires, gas, going to the races (time) and all the other stuff that goes with racing is expensive. You will spend $$$ racing. It is what it is, an expensive hobby.

'95 Z-28, LT1? What are your plans, toy or daily driver?
Fun looking toy but it’d wear you out living with it on a daily basis.

You're considering making payments on a car that is going to constantly require repair, and new parts. Think about that for a minute...

Tell him you're his brother, and he should keep it in the family and sell it for $5k with the stipulation that if you ever sell it, he has first crack at it for the 5k he's selling it to you for.

My current car is financed via JJ Banc company, who do classic/collectible car loans. Extremely easy, have good credit, call em, 5 year loan, 7 percent for my credit (extremely good credit)

They had a guy come out and take pictures etc, he sent in the pictures, loan was approved.

I honestly don't think so. all of this is less than 3 years old. 5 at max, and he rarely drives it. Engine and drive train is basically new. (non-stock motor)
Headers
block
pistons
crank
valves
mainfold
exhaust
Heads
Transmission
Rear End
EFI
Brake Lines
Discs
calipers
drag radials
Wheels.

edit; He was running a ProCharger at 10PSI (he's the lead machinist at ProCharger) but got tired of the power breaking parts. So he basically started over with a new motor, replaced the guts for more torque, and went naturally aspirated, put in a manual 6sp, new suspension etc

hasn't driven it much in this configuration because he mentioned he wanted to tune it before selling it. But said something of the particular ECM being older and hard to tune. I know he had a laptop he used to plug into it and we would break many laws dialing it in.

It was many years ago, but my regular bank gave me a loan on an old muscle car. The loan fell under the heading of "Automobiles of Interest" or some such thing. I'm not sure if that was particular to that bank. I do remember I paid slightly higher interest than their conventional car loan, but it wasn't much (maybe 1/4%).

Sounds like fun, go for it.
Just remember, if you play you WILL pay. It’s only a matter of time.
Don’t drive it like a stolen rental and you’ll probably be just fine with plain ole routine maintenance.
