I'm not saying I disagree with the penalty, but 50 points is 5 more than one could possibly earn in a race (42 for winning, 1 for leading a lap, and 1 for leading the most laps). I'm just surprised it was more than the max he could gain in a race.

Yep, but it sends the message it needs to send.

I didn't even think it gave them advantage, but I guess it sends the message.

The engine issue didn't give him an advantage?

Did you watch the race? He dominated the whole race. It wasn't even close.

I was at the race. The part of the engine that wasn't up to spec actually hurts the motors power and balance from what I read.

An engine with lighter connecting rods can accelerate faster than one with heavier connecting rods. Less rotating mass. If it was just "1" rod I don't see a big difference in acceleration speed, but all 8 rods can be very significant.

Even if it was one rod and there was no significant differences, NASCAR takes engine penalties very serious, this will hurt Toyotas reputation as well.

Article from jayski says it was one of them and it was underweight by 3 grams (minimum weight is 525)

Also I know he dominated the race, but saying "It wasn't even close" is an error with words. Kayne was a second back?

He was a second behind, with what, 2-3 laps remaining? If Kenseth dropped a few spots from the pits, he'd be back up there. Who's to say he was racing hard the whole race? He could have saved his car until the end. It was also a fuel saving race too, not sure if he let up on the gas towards the end.

That is true. I turned to my dad and we talked after the race that Kenseth wasn't driving hard, he was driving just enough to keep Kayne behind him. There were times during the race just watching with your eyes when he ran hard he was crazy fast.

Other than the engine not passing post-race, what exactly failed?

That is a harsh penalty considering Toyota builds JGR's engines.

Agreed, one thing you cannot mess with in NASCAR - is the engine...

Kenseth should be ok. One more win and he will be locked into the Chase.

Quote:
Statement from TRD (Toyota Racing Development)
“During NASCAR’s routine post-race tear down of Matt Kenseth’s race-winning car and engine from Kansas Speedway, one of our engine connecting rods weighed in three grams under the legal minimum weight of 525 grams. None of the other seven connecting rods were found to be under the minimum weight. We take full responsibility for this issue with the engine used by the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) team this past Sunday in Kansas — JGR is not involved in the process of selecting parts or assembling the Cup Series engines. It was a simple oversight on TRD’s part and there was no intent to deceive, or to gain any type of competitive advantage. Toyota is a company that was built on integrity, and that remains one of the guiding principles of the company. The goal of TRD has always been — and will continue to be — to build high-performance engines that are reliable, durable and powerful, and within the guidelines established by NASCAR.”

The statement sounds more like TRD will be picking up the tab.

RICHMOND, Va.—Henrico County Police had two adult males in custody Friday night after a fight in the driver/owner lot of Richmond International Raceway following a Nationwide Series race where Richard Childress Racing and Turner Scott Racing crews and drivers nearly brawled.

The police department did not reveal details of who was involved in the altercation but Richard Childress Racing confirmed its involvement and multiple sources said Turner Scott Motorsports personnel and driver Nelson Piquet Jr. were talking to police in the motorhome lot.

— Fight breaks out following Nationwide Series race

A statement from Richard Childress Racing Director of Communications Tim Packman confirmed the team's involvement. "We are aware an incident took place outside of the track's infield following Friday night's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway involving members of our team and others from another team," the statement said. "We are cooperating with the local authorities in this matter."

The incident occurred a little more than an hour after the race.

“Henrico Police are investigating a verbal argument that started in the infield area of RIR that escalated into a physical altercation near the Driver/Owner Lot,” a statement from the police department said.

“The assault occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. Two adult males are in custody as a result of the ongoing investigation. One of the two adult male victims has a shoulder injury.”

Two separate incidents following the Nationwide Series race involved RCR and Turner Scott Motorsports, sparked by an on-track incident between Piquet and RCR driver Brian Scott.

Following the race, both crews nearly came to blows and Scott went up to Piquet, who shoved Scott away and then kicked him in the groin.

Piquet later apologized for kicking Scott, saying it was in self-defense.

“When you get a temper at the end of the race, everybody is tired and frustrated and you do things you don’t mean, too,” Piquet said after the race.

“The intention wasn’t to do that. It was just to keep him away from me because I didn’t want to start a fight. He came running at me yelling. It was kind of a first reaction to defend myself. It wasn’t meant to hit him where it ended up.”
