From Sam Mellinger:

The Chiefs are in an envied spot. They are the Super Bowl favorites, according to some metrics, and they are about to improve — a source close to the team said Justin Houston will likely play against the Cardinals, at least on a pitch count, with the idea of getting him to full strength for the Rams game.

Yeah the Pats can pretty much mug us all day in Foxboro and never get a call. Meanwhile we'll get called on offense and defense on pretty much every crucial 3rd down.

Staying ahead or not doesn't mean much. We need to beat them at home.

It's funny though - everyone has said for years that you wear a defense out by running at them. Why? I know the line smashes into them, but those plays are generally opportunities for the secondary to catch their breath a bit. And ask pass-rushers what wears their legs out faster - run defense or pass rushing. The vast majority of them will tell you rushing the passer. Trying to explode upfield and work towards that quarterback is just exhausting for these guys.

So you put Houston out there with limited reps of getting after the passer and just trying to be as explosive as possible and you'll probably get his heart rate back up a bit and help out in that regard as well.

Seems like a perfect recipe to get him back in the mix. And if you don't play him at all vs. AZ, you might as well just have him sit through the bye because I don't know how you could expect him to be all that useful against LA at that altitude in Mexico City.

I have also been puzzled by "wear out the defense" comments. Take just the lines which has to be the most tiring in many ways, trying to push around the big bodies in the trenches. The D-line subs guys in pretty often but the O-line stays the same every down. How is this supposed to be any advantage to the offense?

I get it with the skill players in general. Take the comments from Ramsey and Harris earlier this year about trying to keep up with 'Reek. Chasing him around wore them out all game long. Of course DBs are not rotated the way that the D-line usually is and WRs do come out for plays at times which helps to keep them fresher.

And I've heard DL's say that oftentimes the run plays are their 'plays off' in that they'll just kinda push ahead. With their mass, it's a lot easier for them to just kinda fall forward and hold their ground than it is to try to run upfield and fight around/through a guy. That would seem to be doubly so in a 2-gap scheme where they're just there to occupy linemen.

Yeah, the 'beat 'em down with the run game' thing seems to be a relic to me; something analysts say today because crusty old football coaches said it in 1962 when the forward pass was a novelty. I can't find a sensible factual basis in it. This idea that some 195 lb DB is any more eager to stand up to Kareem Hunt or Saquon Barkley in the 1st quarter than he is in the 4th is just laughable. Sorry guys, but that poor bastard has no interest in hitting that guy at ANY point in the game.

Easier to block than it is to beat a block
Easier to run a route than to cover a route

It's just been that way forever. I've heard many ex-player talk about it. It's much more draining to play defense than it is to play offense. Only guys running fly routes tend to get worn out as much as defenders.
