Biking Question
I have a Road Bike which I really enjoy riding. I am wanting to branch out a little and take up Gravel and maybe Cyclocross. I have tried MTB, and just didn't care for it.

Any suggestions, tips etc? I am looking at the Salsa Warbird and Trek line of bikes right now.

Went to the local bike shop finally. Told the guy what my needs were. He recommended and I road a Specialized Rockhopper linked below.

$560 out the door price which includes free tuneups for life. Why is this so much cheaper than the online price?

Also, holy shit. I had no idea bikes could be that smooth and shift with such ease. My God it was incredible and this is just a "basic" model?

Nice entry lovel model.
Keep it clean and get a tuneup on it once a year and it'll last a lifetime
I have an entry level Trek that I eventually handed down to my daughter to use to travel around the university campus.
The bike is 16 years old, sat out in the rain, snow, dust for 4 years on campus. Clean it up, tune it up and still rides great.

That's exactly why all of us have been telling you to stay away from Walmart junk. Fast shifting is especially necessary when riding dirt trails, if you have to wait around for some clunky derailleur to do its job you will go down.

Is that the type of riding you're looking at doing? If not, I'm not sure it makes sense to carry the weight of a mountain bike around with you.

As far as the price difference, the online price of my CrossRip was $1099, the regular price at the place I bought it was $999, and I got another 10% off because I bought it during a winter sale, so I don't think it's all that unusual.

I don't think it's the type of riding I'll be doing usually, however, he said if I wanted a bike that could last me decades and if someday I wanted the option to do some dirt trails (lots in Phoenix, even a canal one by our house), he'd recommend getting that so I never have to buy another bike. He explained the difference in this 29 inch wheel design vs the same bike with 27.5.....I am not too sure I understood that but the 27.5 inch bike was about $100 cheaper than this 29 inch version.

They basically had mostly Specialized bikes is the shop as well. A few Cannondales and that was it.
