Ten Things About Today's AFC Championship Game: KC 35 Tits 24

Ten Things About Today’s AFC Championship: KC 35 Tits 24

10. I cried around nine this morning. Cried a little when I saw my wife crying after Patrick’s first kneel down. Then I came home and got a hot shower and a double shot of Reiger’s Whiskey and some Minsky’s Pizza. and now I’m just warm, and full, and have a buzz. There’s no way I can sum up this whole wonderful day in just Ten Things, and I may forget a few things along the way. But I’ll do my best. Before I get too deep I’d like to thank my friend Twisted Chief for a wonderful 2019 season. I don’t want to embarrass him, but he did some incredibly thoughtful and gracious things for Mrs. B and me this year, and made this the best year as a Chiefs fan since I was ten years old. I just turned 60 last summer. Thanks TC, you’re a good dude, and I appreciate you very much.

9. I talked a little about my Dad Kenny this morning before leaving for Arrowhead. I’ll tell you my favorite Kenny football story. My dad was a rabid fan. Rabid. Anyway, he was also a Deacon in the Fairmount Christian Church. My dad was a Korean War Vet, and promised the Lord if he’d get him back home alive, he’d go to church every Sunday. He did come home and did go to church, but hated sermons. He’d fidget and squirm and just hated them. So when he became a deacon, he would volunteer for shut-ins service every week. If you’re not familiar with that, it’s when they go visit elderly people who are too weak or ill to come to church, and serve them communion. So this was back in the late 1970s when the TV networks first started showing home games IF the game sold out locally. Chiefs are playing at home against the Raiders, and right before the half, the Chiefs get screwed big on a call which sustains a Raiders drive, and they score to take the lead right before the half. As the refs are running off the field for halftime, my dad is leaning over the rail cussing a blue streak at them and is just super pissed and livid. Cut to a week later, dad is serving communion to a nice 80-ish little old lady. She says “Kenny, were you at the Chiefs game last weekend?” “Yes ma’am…I sure was.” “Was that YOU leaning over the rail screaming at that referee at the end of the half? I saw that on TV and thought that might be you.” Dad says “Well ma’am, I shouldn’t lie if I’m serving you communion. I’m afraid, yes, that was me.” She says “Well I hope you gave that son of a bitch an earful, that call was Bullshit!” That story sums up my football relationship with my father.

8. I took a few pics before my phone died from the cold. It was 19 at kickoff. For those of you watching around the country, sometimes its hard to tell just how cold it is from TV. Today was pretty damn cold. Not as bad as the Kicker Who Shall Remain Nameless Game, because at least this one was played in the daylight. But plenty cold. Too cold for me and Mrs. B to tailgate, so we just had a little picnic in the Subie. I know the CPers had a couple gatherings today, and maybe one day I’ll make it to show myself at one of them, but today was just too cold. I have a gold parking pass and it still took me 45 minutes to park, and I was there three hours early. Parking at Arrowhead can be a daunting task. My wife hates to be cold. I’ll put up a picture of her in her Michelen Man suit. Chiefs won the toss. When they defer, it helps them I think when they get the ball first in the second half. Helped today so the defense wouldn’t have to go out and face Derrick Henry immediately to start the second half too.

7. Speaking of Derrick Henry, only 19 carries for 69 yards. Only SEVEN yards rushing in the second half. Patrick had nearly as many yards as he did, and both guys rushed for one TD. Mahomes rushing TD was much more spectacular than Henry’s. More on that later. Spags’ D only gave up one TD in the second half, and that was garbage time after a desperation fake punt. Big props to Spags for taking the dumpster fire that was Grandpa Bob’s alleged “defense” to the Super Bowl in ONE year. Amazing accomplishment. Nothing but respect for Spags after this campaign.

6. What can you say about PMII? After we got down 10-0, I was not real happy but not panicked either. Sometimes it takes our defense a little while to figure out what the other guys are doing, and sometimes it takes our offense awhile to get cranked up, especially in really cold weather. Please don’t take this as sacrilege, but PMII is the 2020 version of Elway. Elway in his prime would do this shit to the Chiefs D over and over again. Hit on third and long like its no big deal. If you cover everybody, he runs like a deer for a first down. Gets rid of the ball before you can sack him, etc etc etc. PMII put this team on his back the last TWO weeks and WILLED them to a Super Bowl. That’s a fact. His TD run to put the Chiefs ahead at the half was pure Elway. God it’s nice to do that to others. Is that biblical? All I can say is THANK GOD.

5. I was glad Chris Jones gutted up and played. He didn’t have a lot of personal marquee plays, but was a handful and a problem for the Tits offensive line. Honey Badger played a great game and laid the wood on some guys. K-Pass continues to develop as a dangerous pass rusher. Frank Clark was disruptive and got the final sack to put the Tits back in their brassiere. Entire defensive effort the second half is what we needed to see three years ago in the Mariota throws a TD pass to himself game. What a wonderful revenge for that awful loss three years ago. They broke my heart that night. But today we avenged our last seasonal loss (to them) and denied them a trip to the Super Bowl. Payback is indeed a bitch.

4. The celebration after the game was like nothing I’ve ever seen at Arrowhead, ever. Hundreds of people came up out of the tunnel below my seats. Families of players. Chiefs employees. Former Chiefs players. It was like a huge family reunion. I saw people hugging and crying all over the field, and all over the stands. People who sit behind me were patting me on the back and hugging me and saying “This is for you, you old bastard” and stuff like that. Which was great. I am old. And I’m too old to yell a lot but did my best to make noise today (Yes, I still fart on third down.) So I’m close to exhausted and the quality of my writing is not would it should be. I apologize. But the whole reality of this day has not yet sunk in with me. It’s going to take awhile to process all of this.

3. So as the players and families left the field I got to high five many many many great guys. Stenerud, Lanier, Derrick Johnson, Deron Cherry, and many others. I shook hands with Allen Wright. Who’s he? He’s the Chiefs equipment guy. He lives in Sugar Creek very near where I live, and he’s been the Chiefs equipment guy forever. Big career day for him and he was grinning ear to ear. Mrs. B caught gloves from Breeland, Kelce and a D-lineman who was wearing an AFC Champs T-shirt over his jersey, and she wasn’t sure who he was. I didn’t see him, but I’ll put a picture of the gloves up. Kelce’s glove is the white one that says “Killatrav” on the inside. Cooooool…..

2. I got to high five Andy Reid too. Man, I’m so happy for Andy. This will get him in Canton no matter what happens in Miami. Also so happy for Clark Hunt. I was very fortunate to have a drink with him about a month ago (don’t ask) and I told him that the one thing I wanted was for him to get his dad’s trophy. It’s only right that we have at least ONE of them in Arrowhead. When Norma Hunt kissed it at the ceremony, that made me tear up. People forget about Norma. She’s quite a great lady.

1. So the best thing is, WE’RE NOT DONE YET! In fact, we’ve got two more weeks of work to go, preparing for the Niners. You know, Faid fans have to just HATE this Super Bowl, because it features the two teams that they hate the most. Heh heh heh….suck it Faiders fans. I’m sure Niner fans would agree with that. I don’t hate the Niners, but in the payback is a bitch department, we can pay them back for all those retread QBs like Bono, and Grbac, and Smith (Montana was OK but just too damn old) AND pay Dee Ford back for that Goddamn lining up offside thing from last year. And it should be about fifty degrees warmer, which should help our passing game. The Super Bowl. Us. Whoda thunk it? Let’s not let the moment be too big. Just another game. The tough ones are over with, we’re playing with house money now. Might as well kick ass one more time, right? One last thing: It took the Royals 30 years to return to the World Series, which was most of my adult life. It took the Chiefs 50 years to return to the Super Bowl, which is most of my entire life. So here’s to us, the Chiefs Kingdom. And the future looks very very bright for us all. Now let’s finish the job.

You were 10, George. I was 14. Every car horn in Mission, Kansas was going off when the Chiefs beat the Vikings, 23-7. I remember it just like yesterday.

Looking forward to remembering this next one too!

I understand there are a litany of fans who have waited for far longer, but I've been waiting for this moment for 27 years.

After the final seconds ticked away, the outpouring of congratulations from past and current friends was staggering. Some people I haven't spoken to in more than a decade reached out and it's those people that made really made me appreciate this moment a lot more.

For years on end the Chiefs were just "there" and were always good for a playoff screw-up year in and year out. I'd be crushed year in and year out, but I'd press on, joke about the Chiefs being those lovable losers and patiently wait for next season hoping that would be "the year". I must have made an impression (or I was the only Chiefs fan they knew) because they took the time to reach out in a moment they knew I would cherish.

Right now, even with one MAJOR game left on the schedule: I'm on top of the world. I hope the Chiefs are a bit more focused than I am though.

Congratulations to everyone on seeing a moment that I never thought would come. We have the Lamar Hunt Trophy, now let's bring home the Lombardi!

Awesome as usual. A few things really interesting to me after doing a sober re-watch.

Yeah it was great Derrick Henry only got 70 yards but you can credit our offense playing great defense there. We took Henry out of the game. The bigger story is Scott Van Pelt said that Derrick Henry only got 1.73 yards after contact. Spags deserves a gold medal for coaching. Hitchens had really specific quotes about how to tackle Henry. Frank Clark talked a huge game and backed it up.

The play I keep watching over and over is Mahomes' big run. Unlike Lamar, Mahomes is not a trained running back. Yet his hesitation move basically opened up that sideline for him. But his ballhandling... how does he hold on to that ball as Titans are doing their damnedest to strip the ball from him? I think back to the WaPo article about Mahomes' offseason conditioning. You'd have to think his strength was a big reason he held on to that football.

Thank you George for all of your terrific write ups. We as Chiefs fans have been wandering in the football desert for half a century! 10 years longer than Moses had to. Super Bowl I is the first football game I ever watched and rooted for the Chiefs to beat the vaunted Packers.
I was a 6th grader at that time. They've been a huge part of my life ever since.
We have seen every heart ripping playoff loss and every losing season since that loss to Miami in "the longest game".

We have felt cursed for sure.

But now we have Patrick Lavon Mahomes and he has come into town and curb-stomped all of our old ghosts and curses.
Think about it....
We are curse free at last!

Ok I’ll be honest, last night (on UK time don’t forget) I felt a little numb. After last week’s unbelievable comeback this week felt a little different - like a regular season game/win. Sure I was happy and enjoyed it but didn’t really sink in. This morning I got up for work and put on chiefs sports radio on the drive into the office and suddenly everything hit me. I had to pull over the car for a couple minutes to get it together. Still emotional typing this now. I don’t want to claim to be super fan or any BS but I’ve been a UK based fan since 2003 when I lived in KC for a year. Watched damn near every game since then including the dog years of Herm, crennel, Pioli etc. Stayed up to 4am to watch the likes of Brodie croyle. I know you guys who go to arrowhead every game are the true fans but it would be easy for me to be a Patriots fan or a Steelers fan or a GB fan like 99.9% of NFL fans over here. So **** them and their glory hunting - I’m gonna enjoy this ride even more now after 10 years of mostly garbage. Because I think we all deserve it.

Well done George!

I was on Guam in the Navy the last time they were in the SB.

It feels like a 50 lb. tumor has been removed from my back. Slept wonderful last night.

Holy moly, I had no idea Clark Hunt was such a small man.
