Credit to Spags and the secondary

Josh Allen was the best QB in the NFL against the blitz this season. I heard on PFT that we blitzed something like 19 times and Buffalo averaged 4.6 yards per play on those blitzes. It seems like the CB and S blitzes were really effective, with Sneed, Mathieu, and Sorensen all getting effective pressure.

And then there is the man coverage that just left no targets all night for Allen. I don’t think you can ever have too many weapons in the passing game or too many defensive backs. We are really deep. Breeland, Fenton, Ward, Matthieu, Sorensen, Sneed, Thornton. That is 7 solid defenders not including Baker. Having so much depth allows us to call the CB and S blitzes, because there is so much cover talent on the field at one time. Having DB that will play tough against the run (Mathieu, Sorensen, Ward and Sneed come to mind) allows us to have acceptable run defense even with Nickel and Dime packages.

Great talent assembled by Veach, great game plan from Spags, and great execution by the whole defense. Hopefully the trend continues against the Bucs. They have some good weapons, no doubt. But I think there are some picks to be had from the fading reality of the QB formerly known as GOAT.

It's something that is really hard to prove because these coaching staffs are so large. And it's a group effort. I do find it intriguing because while I do think Spags has been a Super Bowl winning DC prior to coming here KC's play against the opponents we need to take out has been incredible.

I like our personnel but you have to think we are coaching at a high level as well.

The analytics said don't blitz Allen or play man.

We did both.

From 2013 to 2016, the Chiefs had a Top 8, if not Top 3 defense, which included a great secondary with Marcus Peters, Sean Smith, Eric Berry and so on.

When the talent pipeline failed and guys like DJ, Tamba, Poe and others got old, the defense began slipping to the point that by 2018, it was absolutely awful.

Personally, I would have fired Sutton after the 2017 season but Spagnuolo wanted to take a year off from coaching before returning.

But Sutton didn't "make" the secondary suck. The secondary sucked because outside of Peters, Dorsey failed time and time again to successfully draft cornerbacks and safeties.

The Chiefs had a Top 8, if not Top 5 defense from 2013-2016. The talent pool was slowly diminished and never replenished, so by 2018, the Chiefs were relying on off the street players like Orlando Scandrick, old AF Darrell Revis, old AF Ron Parker and so on.

The secondary prior to the talent level dropping off was pretty goddamned good, as was the defense.

You must have a very short memory.

I don't disagree; but I would say that the coaching quality has risen dramatically as well. From Spags on down to Madison.

Sutton basically ran the same defense all year, and yet guys didn't know who they had in the AFCCG. I mean, maybe they were just morons, but it sure seems like they weren't well coached either.

Absolutely. As I stated in that post, I would have preferred that Sutton was fired after the 2017 season but as I also mentioned, Spagnuolo was Reid's choice for DC but he wanted to take off year, so he wasn't hired until 2019.

It's difficult to coach up washed up, worn out, over-30 veteran secondary players because by that point, they've lost their speed and ability to defend, especially at the CB position. It's also shocking that Sutton got a consulting gig after the 2018 shit show.

It's still really amazing how Veach and Spagnuolo turned around the #32 overall defense in less than a year.

Remember when we drafted Keivarre Russel, DJ White and Eric Murray to bolster the CBs? Lol

Crazy that same draft gave us Tyreek, Jones and Robinson.
