Warpaint Illustrated has learned that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver/kick returner Eddie Drummond. He is the leading candidate to return kicks for the team this season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers worked out Drummond earlier last week, but he turned down a better offer to play in Kansas City, signing a two-year contract.

Drummond, who spent the last five seasons with the Detroit Lions, made the Pro Bowl in 2004 following a season in which he returned two kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns. He is one of only three players in NFL history to accomplish that feat, along with former Chief Dante Hall and Bears kick returner Devin Hester.

In five years Drummond has six total return touchdowns, two on kickoffs and four on punts. For his career he averages 9.8 yards per punt return and 23.6 yards per kickoff return, with highs of 13.2 on punts and 26.6 on kickoffs (both in 2004). Last season he averaged 26 yards per kickoff return, but just 7.7 yards on punt returns.

With the departure of Hall, the Chiefs have been looking for a replacement returner all offseason. Drummond appears to fit the bill, and may make it tough for rookie Ean Randolph to make the 53-man roster.

They didn't want to tie up a spot on a return specialist only.

They have 5 WRs - Williams, Calvin, Furrey, McDonald and Troy Walter and they will use Walter and McDonald as their returners.

With this signing, I imagine Kennison, Bowe, Parker, Webb, Hannon and Drummond will be our receivers.

We really need the extra field position so this is a good signing.

Wow, nice pickup. I liked Randolph, but Drummond's a proven commodity.

Dante Hall was/is better.

Drummond is small, often injured, and can't return punts that well. Even when he was a Pro Bowler, Hall was better. Having said that, it's a good signing because he's better than anyone else on the Chiefs roster that has tried to return kicks/punts this offseason. To me, this looks like a "quick fix" to a plan that's gone wrong since trading Dante Hall.

Gone wrong? We got a 5th and swapped in another round for a guy who was on the decline. He was whining because Vermeil wasn't around anymore. He also made too much money.

Can't return punts that well? He had over 10 yards a return last year.

Didn't think there was much of a plan beyond the want/need to get Dante's I-need-a-hug ass out of town. The thought process was probably: We'll find someone, and, most importantly, it won't be Hall. Getting a draft pick was an added bonus.
