Dude...are you serious, you're including Delanie Walker's catches in Alex Smith's total in an argument about checkdowns? Delanie is a tight end and he also lines up as h-back and wide receiver. And it's not really fair to count an h back reception as a checkdown to a back as they're only a back in title, its tight end lined up a foot behind the line of scrimmage and Walker was always running downfield patterns. If you watched any 49ers games you would know Delanie is never coming out of the backfield he was the second tight end and an all purpose weapon.

So many downfield routes that his longest reception of the year was 29 yards.

I'm a Niner fan and I've watched every snap of Alex Smith's career and I think he's a good player and a good fit for the Chiefs. Everyone here is blindly hating simply because he's not a qb you drafted and you have Matt Cassell PTSD.

He averaged 10 yards a catch, you want him to be Mike Wallace running go routes every play, he's the second tight end and Davis is the primary deep threat. Delanie also missed 6 games in 2011 with a broken jaw. Have you seriously ever watched the niners play, the fact that you would include Walker's catches to illustrate a point about checkdowns would suggest that you haven't.

It's not just about Matt Cassel.

It's about Bill Kenney.
It's about Steve DeBerg.
It's about Dave Kreig.
(And yes) It's about Joe Montana.
It's about Elvis GrBac.
It's about Trent Green (Yes, him too).
It's about Damon Huard.

It's about the fact that only 3 QBs over the age of 33 have won SBs.

You draft and develop your own, because those are the guys that have the potential to open windows for longer periods of time, and because teams don't traxde franchise calibre 29 year old QBs.

If I had to guess even though I'm sure I'll get killed from bringing him up I'd say similar to Cassel's pro bowl season with more yards and a higher completion percentage. I'd guess 27 td's 7 int. 3,500 yards and 65% completion and 11 wins for the team. It wouldn't surprise me if he hit 30 td passes though with how much Reid likes to throw the ball. People over value the importance of yards and td passes though, the most important stat that correlates with winning and losing in the NFL are turnovers. Jim Harbaugh's number one rule for the quarterback was to protect the football over everything else and maybe Smith didn't put up fantasy numbers the last couple of years, but he won a lot of games, including games where they fell behind and he had to bring em back. He had 6 4th quarter comebacks in 2011.

I think the big concern that is if he asked to do more the\an he was asked to do the last 2 years those turnover numbers will increase at a more rapid pace than the positive numbers. It's a very odd combination pairing a QB that traditionally coaches don't want airing it out a lot with a coach that likes to air it out. On the surface it seems like a recipe for disaster. We all hope to hell he gets the numbers you mentioned, but I'd have to say the chances of that happening are not very good.

I understand given the history why you would be skeptical, but it seems like Reid and Dorsey and are handling the situation like a winning organization should. If you go to the other extreme and don't draft best player available and reach for high round qb's out of need you end up like the Cleveland Browns continually drafting busts that get coaches and gms fired and set the organization back over and over. Just last year the Browns spent a first rounder on Weeden who is older than Alex Smith is.

Not fair to Tent Green. He led the #1 offense in the league, it isn't his fault the defense sucked.
