Marvel Surprise: Robert Redford In Talks To Star In ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

EXCLUSIVE: Here is a fun Marvel scoop. I’m hearing that Robert Redford is in discussions to join the cast of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger, the sequel that brings Chris Evans back as the shield-carrying superhero. Redford is in talks to play a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D., the superhero collective run by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing the film from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whose Marvel script credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World. The sequel will be released by Disney April 4, 2014.

In between running his Sundance empire, Redford most recently starred in All Is Lost, the J.C. Chandor-scripted and directed survival tale. While Marvel was predictably mum as Kevin Feige’s unit always is on casting matters, Marvel characters have a tendency to show up in other superhero movies, and I believe that is likely to be on the menu for Redford. It will be somewhat ironic for the patriarch of independent cinema to become a regular in some of Hollywood’s biggest studio blockbusters. Redford’s repped by WME

So the second ending weren't they mutants? And Magneto's children at that? Unless X-Men Evolution wasn't that canon but I'm pretty sure the boy is super speed and the girl is like Jean but hella unstable. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

In the comics, yes, they are mutants. In the mid-credits movie sequence, though, Strucker described them as the only two survivors of a series of tests they carried out using Loki's scepter. Quicksilver indeed has super speed, and Scarlet Witch can cast 'hexes', which can change the likelihood of things, like someone slipping, or a water pipe bursting under someone's feet. She's also a sorceress in the comics. In the movie, the only thing we saw her do was some telekinesis, so they may change her powers up.

And yes, Scarlet Witch is more emotionally unstable than Jean Grey, which, as you may imagine, is quite a statement.

Unlike the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "The Winter Soldier" minimizes the use of visual effects as much as possible. Anthony Mackie, elaborated: "The Russos, what they did that was so great was, they wanted to stay with live action, which is a dying art form...If they could build it, they built it. If we could do it, we did it. They wanted to do as little CGI as possible. That's why the movie looks so great."

I loved it but I did have some small quips with it.

Helicarriers and how they even came across as a good idea and so easily corruptible aside, Zola was dumb.... just dumb. So in the 70's they save his mind and consciousness into multiple old tape computers? Not buying it. Leave out Zola, hell leave out Hydra from this movie, for not one second did I believe that Pearce and Co. were Hydra, in any way shape or form. Having them mention "Hail Hydra" before they die and whatever bullshit that one guy was spouting when he fought Falcon didn't do it for me. You could've just had Pearce be the evil corporate head out for his own devices plot and did just fine. Even in the credit scene Von Strucker says something about "Hydra and Shield are pointless now." If you're going to bring back Hydra, don't make a mockery of it.

And I know I'm going to catch flak for this but can we just not have Scarlett Johnannson in this movie? Outside of looking hot she literally didn't do anything besides tell a story of how the Winter Soldier killed the person she was protecting by shooting through her. I just don't care for Black Widow anymore, Scarlett's star power gives her way too many lines.

Oh no, it's definitely canon in the comics. It's a central issue in the comics. In the Marvel studios movies, though, it can't be, because Magneto - along with the rest of the X-Men - is licensed to Fox.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are, through a loophole in the licensing, allowed to be in both Fox's X-Men series (due to them being mutants) and Marvel's Avengers series (due to them being long-time Avengers). Fox is, so far, passing on Scarlet Witch, but weirdly enough, a different interpretation of Quicksilver is going to be in the upcoming X-Men movie.

Sigh. Such is the world of comic book movies.

there was someone who could do the covert "other orders" actions on board the Lemurian Star, but also to provide balance to Captain America. He's getting his footing in a strange land, so he needs people he can identify with. Falcon is one, but even he doesn't also provide the contrast in personality she does; he is an honorable person who is having to live in a dishonorable world, while she is just the opposite. Both of their characters are strengthened from their relationship, and this is the logical place for her to be after Avengers.

Plus, she big-sisters him into asking out Sharon, and he (let's face it) kinds of needs to be big-sistered (or at least, big-siblinged).

Dang well that's bs. I thought X-Men was Marvel? How can they split up certain sections to different companies? That's foolish. And yeah I had no gripes about Black Widow being in the movie. She did provide the other side of the coin to Captain essentially. Thanks for expert knowledge on this stuff!
