I don't trust anyone who shares the same last name as former Oiler Radek Dvorak. What a useless bum he was...

The guy write numerous columns a WEEK... nice work finding a few things over the course of 25 years...

But let's forget Dvorak's credentials... how about you stick to what he SAID... Do you NOT think a $150 tablet will be available in the next few years.. one that is on par with the iPad 5 or whatever is out at the time?

If you don't, then you are ignoring the MASSIVE body of evidence pointing to the contrary.

I lol'd at 'nobody wants a mouse. I don't want one of these newfangled devices'.

He said 'nobody wants a mouse'. That's pretty big, even if you write numerous weekly columns.

He predicted the iPhone would be a disaster... more people at my university probably have iPhones than any other device.

He predicted cable-based internet would flop. That's just silly, especially from a tech guy as experienced as him.

Fine, he has credentials. And he probably knows an awful lot about the industry. But he is very clearly wrong on all three points. So with that in mind, maybe an alternative source would be in order as well, to supplement his claims.

As for belittling the market analysts, you just don't want to acknowledge a contrary (and mainstream) viewpoint.
No, they don't have a clue what they are talking about.. sorry, but it's true.

As to the component costs.. I conceded that screen and battery were up there but don't matter...

The report above is actually wrong but it's close enough to illustrate a point.. the point being that EVERYTHING on that list can be bought at the same price by ACER, ASUS, etc except the A5 and DRAM...

There will certainly be a $150 tablet out in the next few years. But they will be no more relevant than the plethora of $200 netbook computers that were vomited into the market last year when netbooks were thought to be the new thing. They will be consumed by those who only see price as the bottom line purchasing factor, and their luster will quickly fizzle.

Um, I guess we aren't debating the same thing then.. because I concede that Apple will maintain market share until the rest catch up on device power WITH considerably lower prices... if you look, I am talking about better devices coming out this FALL and not really eating into Apples share until NEXT year and beyond...

I am talking what the FUTURE holds... I am perfectly willing to admit that as long as tablets are in the novelty space.. Apple wins.

Oh and speaking of hardware limitations... the Tegra3 (due out September) will be more powerful than a CoreDuo proc.

Having owned an Acer laptop, the only time I was happy with it was when I tied a chain to it and used it as a boat anchor. I watched it blue-screen more times than I checked Facebook. It was an altogether wretched piece of tech, and if Acer goes out of business tomorrow it will be too soon.

Well, THIS I will make a bet on... there will be $150 tablets with BETTER hardware specs except for "feel" and battery life.. and WHEN that happens you will see Apple's market share erode quickly as they become a "luxury" device much like most people see Macs

Ok, then plug in Asus or any other number of manufacturers.. I wanted to point to manufacturers that don't overcharge like Motorola or Sony

Fair enough. But don't you think that as the market requires tablets to be more than just novelty items, Apple is going to evolve them accordingly? Maybe they won't; the Blackberry tab may be a far better business device, as is the case with its phones; corporate settings will probably stick with what they know if they decide to make a move to tablet.

The thing is, we don't know if tablets are truly going to evolve into full-on computer replacements (Star Trek tells us they are, but that's not written in stone). The only way that realistically happens is if Microsoft goes hardcore into the tablet market, and even then it seems like at least another decade before tablets take over as our full-time computers. And frankly, I'm not even sure I want that. I'm buying an iPad 2 to take some hours away from my Macbook; it's two years old, and doesn't need to be running 24/7 when most of what I do is navigate message boards. Also, since the tablets don't heat up, I'm not irradiating myself. But as far as writing an essay or a script or anything of substance, I don't want to use a touch screen; I want some fricking buttons.

Again, I'm sure we're moving towards a world where the only computers available are tablets, but we're not there yet and I don't see the point in acting like we are.

Racing to the bottom is not a winning game you know.

Sure, there will be cheaper tablets out there, but Apple is going to dominate this part of the market. They're ahead of everyone by a LONG, LONG ways. By the time these $150 tablets are out people will have already bought 2, 3, 4 iPads and Apple will laugh all the way to the bank.

I'm sure a lot of people wish that there was a car maker out there that could match Mercedes or BMW for the price of sub KIA. There was probably a day when people would be out claiming some new car maker was going to kill these guys and beat them in every imaginable way. Except they never did. People are still willing to pay more for those cars, no matter what anyone else makes.

Sweating over tablets is a dumb game. Apple already won this game. If Android wants to do something amazing, figure out what's next, and beat Apple to that one....

(disclaimer: the only Apple product I own is an iPod touch, although I do plan to buy an iPad, and a kindle, and probably a Nook Color as well.)

Bingo.

To add onto that argument, ask anyone who bought a Vizio HDTV if they wish they'd coughed up a little more cash and bought a Samsung or some other, legitimate brand. Cheaper rarely equates to better, especially when it comes to technology.

Ok here is a comparison of BOMs... Apple on left vs XOOM on right

WOW! Apple really has a lead here! The problem is that even with "market leader" pricing.. they won't be able to keep up if they keep using proprietary procs and DRAM... everything else is cheap for EVERYONE now.. THANKS APPLE!
