The Dodgers keep giving a retired player a $0 contract

Doing the right thing by a corporate entity is so rare.

Quote:

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Andrew Toles to a new contract even though he hasn't played Major League Baseball since 2018, and it seems unlikely he will ever play again.

According to Houston Mitchell of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers re-signed Toles so that he can maintain access to the team's health insurance.

In 2020, Toles was found homeless and sleeping behind a building in Key West, Florida. He was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor trespassing and released to the care of his father.

Toles' father told USA Today in 2021 that his son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and was in a "zombie-like condition."

We are having challenges,'' Alvin Toles told USA Today. "But nothing that God and I can't handle. Schizophrenia, it's just so tough. I mean, he can't even watch TV. He hears voices and the TV at the same time, so it's kind of confusing. I've seen him looking at some baseball games on his laptop, but I don't think he really understands what's going on."

Toles played just parts of three seasons with the Dodgers, but he became a sensation with his stellar play in the 2016 National League playoffs.

This is the fifth-straight season that the Dodgers have quietly renewed Toles' contract. He is on the Dodgers' reserve list and does not receive a salary.

Universal health care sounds great. Until you realize it's run by the government. What they give, they can take away. No thanks.

Hat tip.

It's ****ing INSANE how the players won't push their NFLPA for better/longer medical coverage. Most players (atleast in the NFL) are short lived, but a high percentage have injuries.

If I'm a player, especially a non-star player, I'd give up a fair bit of revenue to protect myself from longer lasting medical effects.

Hey, Ken Griffey, Jr. is still on the Reds payroll so anything is possible.

Who's the guy with the 40 year contract? Bobby Bonilla? I heard it was finally expiring soon.

Wait, no. He's still got another 12 years on a 25-year contract: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/01/bobb...lucrative.html

Griffey's deferred payments go through 2024. Funny enough, he's the 4th highest paid player on the Reds roster this season.

Private companies have already been doing this for decades. Premiums rise and coverage gets reduced. We still have great health insurance compared to most where I work but if you compared what's covered in the plans now to what was there 10 years ago you can see how the value of what you get compared to the percentage of your salary you are paying for has been cut significantly.

Love that argument. Like private health insurance is out there covering everything. There are well documented cases of health insurance companies ****ing over the little person because they want to save a couple of dollars.

Love reading stories like this, especially because they are so rare. Especially these days. Glad the Dodgers are taking care of their own, and that they didn't try to use it in any way for the sake of optics.

I have a friend in the UK that has been waiting 3 years on proper heart treatment, they just keep putting her off. But hey, its free.

Also, since it is free, people go in for minor shit and overload the system.

Same but worse happened to my best friend's mom in Canada. They initially misdiagnosed her problem, then after several years they pivoted and decided she needed surgery (exactly what the doc in the US told them 4 years previously), then they ****ed up the surgery. Then they wouldn't admit they ****ed it up. Then they finally agreed she needed another surgery to fix what they ****ed up in the first one. She died last year still waiting for her surgery to be scheduled.

But it was free. So silver lining, right?

In your world, an 81-year-old grandmother will need a kidney transplant. She will be put on a waiting list and then 15 months later, the government overlords will inform grandma and her family that she won't be getting a kidney because of her age.
