Overreaction Planet

It took a perfect storm for us to lose by one point to the team with the second best record in the AFC last night. SB teams lose games (almost) every year. We have been hanging around 18% chance to win the SB all year. It will in all likelihood end in disappointment. This was always true.

Bottomline is we weren't as good as some of you thought before this game and we are better than some of you think afterwards. In either case, expect to walk away from this season without a SB victory. Play the long game.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with running on first down, either.

The Chiefs had just finished KILLING LAC with the running game.

Schwartz nuked that play, though.

Stop blaming Andy.

Kelce and Robinson don't matter. Mahomes has two reads - he's looking to Conley or Hill. I'm really surprised at you. You of all people know what Mahomes is capable of in the 4th quarter. Does that feel like Mahomes to you? Because the last 3 drives felt vintage game manager. Reid was trying to chunk yards. If he was on the attack, there'd be at least two passes with a first down option first, short checkdown second.

The short check down on 3rd and 4 two series prior.
Going for chunk yards on 2nd down

That doesn't feel like Mahomes. That feels like Mahomes in handcuffs.

And if they were covered he was going to hold it and go for something longer. That isn't a 2-man route.

You just can't resist blaming Andy Reid.

So you agree that this was a designed short pass play. Do you also agree that this was a game manager drive?

I never blamed Andy Reid for either of our other 2 losses. Because we didn't lose this way. I have consistently blamed Andy all year long for this one issue alone.

We have a stud quarterback who can put games away if you put him on the attack. In half of the games, we've had a horrendous 4Q offense... and the pattern is exactly the same - we started the game hot, then suddenly fall completely flat if we walk into the 4th quarter with a lead. I'm just surprised you don't feel that same way. Because if you don't blame Reid for those failures, then you're suggesting that Mahomes can't put teams away. And I don't at all think that's the case.

I don't agree that it was a designed short pass play at all.

Kelce looks to be open there for a first if Mahomes wants to come off his first read and look left. And if Robinson had been singled up going deep there was an opportunity there, too.

Mahomes did what 90% of NFL QBs do on 2nd and 13 from inside their own 10. They get half of the yards back and set up a makeable third down.

Andy did nothing wrong on that series. The OL did a shitload wrong.

This is a designed short play. I don't know how you could think otherwise when his primary and secondary reads are Conley and Hill. I'd guess that Williams, not Kelce, is the next read (If Mahomes doesn't throw the ball, Kelce is double, maybe triple covered). This was a game manager play designed to get chunk yards. Again, it's not a bad play by itself... but it fits the pattern of designing a conservative game manager offense when we have leads, sometimes extremely conservative.

The truth is that this place is a bipolar rapid cycler. When the Chiefs win in Seattle next week, and they will, this place will crown them. The Chiefs have a bad defense, but their offense is good enough to overcome anything. This isn't the 2003 Chiefs that lost to teams like the Bengals or lost by four TDs to the Vikings, or the 1995 team that won almost all its coinflips and got bludgeoned by a mediocre Browns team.

They've beaten three of their five likely playoff opponents already, and lost to two of them by a total of four points. They can lose because every team can lose in a one game sample of a sport that isn't ridiculously imbalanced (like college FB). Teams can beat Mahomes and teams can come in to Arrowhead and win. But no team wants to have to. That's as much as you can hope for in pro football.
Don’t care if they beat Seattle by 50 points.

I’m not crowning these guys until they win a playoff game over a real QB.

No it's not. If the coverage dictates he goes somewhere else with the ball, he will.

You have no idea what you are talking about and just want to blame Reid. You've hated him since he was hired.

Me hating Reid is complete news to me.

Everybody and their Grandma knows the intent of that 2nd down play. It was to get chunk yards back. Having a downfield option as your 3rd (most likely 4th read) doesn't change that.

Pat had the option of holding it on first down instead of handing off. Idk why he did since there’s 8 defenders in the box.

Look at the screen up top. Conley and Kelce are blocking for Tyreek and there isn’t a 3rd defender in the clip, which looks to be 12 or so yards.

It was simple math. 3v2 with an incredibly fast receiver, even on one leg. Would have been at least a 7 yard gain.

Pat has to see that.

Unlike teams of the past, this team will learn from the mistakes made. They've shown toughness, i.e. Baltimore, and will be well prepared for Seattle. With players coming back from injury and having time to look at tape and learn.
We'll come out swingin.

Whatever you say. And no, I don't hate Andy Reid. I like the guy and want him as our coach even with the flaws. If he learned to be more aggressive with a 4Q lead, I'd damn near love him.

What's scary is the apparent underreaction from the franchise. If underreaction is the wrong word, perhaps near nonreaction.

I know, I know, they just like to play it cool on the outside, but on the inside, in private, they're on fire. They're so mad, they kept Sutton, just to make the man fix this mess of a defense....

Plus, what good would reacting do anyway, right? They didn't go to all the SBs they've been to in the last 48 years by overreacting and firing ineffective coaches!

This statement is correct in theory, but I also think of Dan Marino’s record breaking second year in the NFL when his team lost in the Super Bowl and everyone thought that would be the first of many Super Bowl opportunities for the Dolphins with Marino and they never got back.
