2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Deez only thing I will disagree with is the Glasshole family, the Royals will never win shit with those cheapskates at the top. You have to be PERFECT and I mean zero misses in all aspects to win with them at the helm.

Yeah, you can cut Mijares and Betancourt because they weren't committed to winning. But NOT cutting Francouer means that those other roster moves are completely empty. There's no greater signal to everyone in the organization that winning isn't a priority than keeping Jeff Francouer, the worst everyday player in the American League this season.

Same with Starling. If my dumb ass is trumpeting him long before the draft, I'm not incredibly impressed with Moore's ability to "evaluate" that talent.

Signing Yuni--for a second time no less--is embarrassing. It shows the organization embraces '75-levels of analysis. Mijares, according to the Star article, was also let go b/c of $.

If the Giants were willing to put in a waiver claim, I have a hard time believing that they wouldn't have traded something, anything, before the deadline. This much seems pretty obvious.

But let's fire a first base coach. Can't have anyone questioning The Process, and let's make sure that Frenchy is in the lineup--since DM's eye for hitting talent must extend here, too--and let's keep losing.

Can't wait to hear how '16 is really the year.

The Royals will never win shit under DM's tenure. He's a terrible, terrible GM. While I appreciate the thoughtfulness in your post, I disagree with it almost entirely.
This is not in defense of DM but when you pick in the top 5 every year you don't have to have the greatest eye for hitting talent. At least he did take Myers and Starling, Moose, Hosmer and Perez. The lower rounds are all cloudy for everyone.

How many teams passed on Myers before we took him in the third? And how many other teams are as fortunate to have as much hitting talent both in the majors and minors? If DM is such a terrible GM, why does the offensive talent within the Royals readily dwarf all of these other teams?

Difference is that Yuni didn't give a **** about winning, at the very least Francouer tries. However, I agree he needs to go in the offseason.

I'd actually agree that DM probably hasn't been that adventurous with the draft. But that's probably a good thing. In sports, here's something to be said for just doing the simple, smart thing. Look at how many GM's across professional sports just don't do it. DM is just as guilty. Why would anyone sign Yuni the way they did? We could litter the board with examples from different GMs across all sports getting too cute or too smart.

But to be fair... there were great players available in the draft, he took them. That's basically what the Ravens do every single year and they're lauded as geniuses in the draft... pretty much because they avoid doing anything stupid. Or, like many GMs seem to do in their draft, try to outsmart everyone. That allows good players to fall and teams like the Ravens or Steelers pick them up. DM has pretty much done the same thing with the Royals.

Exactly. Indefensible.

Answer: "winning culture" is bullshit and what losers say. Talent trumps, and in KC, so do Moore's pets.

Because they didn't want to pay him $1.5M to sign? Why would the Royals wait until the third is a better question?

Finally, in what way does the offensive talent readily dwarf other teams? We hope that Hosmer develops. We hope that Moose is going to be far more than he currently is. But that's all we have: hope.

DM: Keep hoping.

Hitting is highly projectable and these guys are SUPER young. Deez, you need to pull it together, man. I don't blame you for hating on Moore, but it is crazy not to acknowledge the firepower of this roster.

While people are losing their minds because of Mijares let me say this... and I'm NOT saying this is any excuse for the failure this year during "Our Time."

We all came into this year with higher expectations. We've all been sorely disappointed in the result. When DM came in he said right up front we were going to build through the draft and foreign development. We HAVE and ARE doing that. No... it doesn't make the product on the field right now any more bearable. Anyone who follows baseball (as the people who frequent this thread do) understand that building through the draft in baseball mean time will be taken. It's been 5 years now. The results aren't showing in the teams record this year but I don't think anyone believes we don't have the young talent at the positions to get there overall.

The subject of starting pitching has been a different subject. It's failed miserably and that falls on DM/Glass every bit as much as having talent at the postions is a credit to them. They absolutely must do better and no one disputes that.

While we're killing Glass and DM... which is in large part deserved... lets try to also remember that the first wave is on the MLB roster now and they're young and imperfect but there is a lot to feel good about there for the future. Moose, Perez, Hosmer (hopefully it's just a sophomore slump), Gordon, Cain, Escobar. Future waves have Myers, Starling, Cuthbert. The spending for foreign development is there.

These things take time... and some times a lot of time in baseball... but DM/Glass have done what they said they would in building this way.

Again, we have to get better starting pitching. We have to spend seriously in free agency. We need some good choices to be made with complimentary parts.

It's dismal because we're in last place in an "Our Time" year. That slogan was a huge mistake. The whole team doesn't suck though and things ARE being done to improve it... just not enough yet.

Flame away.

I mean this as sincere praise: there is more potential on the field now than there has been for years.

We'll see how it all translates. But when Frenchy is still playing in an otherwise worthless year, I'm going to have a hard time believing that Moore is anything less than a drooling moron.

Myers clearly still needs work. He is slumping in Omaha right now. What would he be accomplishing in the majors?
