2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I suspect they were giving Cain a day off against a tough righty after he struggled yesterday.

F*** that.

I'm a Royals fan. That isn't going to change. But if they don't AT LEAST acquire one legitimate guy and one OKish veteran (Kevin Millwood, Joe Blanton, etc.), I'm going to be really bitter. And the only thing that will save Dayton Moore is incredible luck.

Explore trades for Danny Haren and Matt Garza. Yordano Ventura+Cuthbert+bullpen piece+filler should be a solid package for either.

Explore FA deals with the Shaun Marcums, Anibal Sanchez's, etc. Acquire a decent.

Just don't sit on your ass and wait for ALL of your pitching prospects to hit. Don't COUNT on Mike Montgomery reverses course all of a sudden. Don't COUNT on John Lamb making the opening day rotation. Don't COUNT on Duffy and Paulino at the ASB next year.

Don't COUNT OUT the Royals for 2013. The everyday lineup can and should be in place soon. A very good one, with good depth. With a good defense behind it. And a very strong bullpen (when not worn to a nub by shitty starting pitching). Add a solid No. 2 and a solid No. 3 to the rotation, and you can cobble together enough of a rotation to contend NEXT YEAR.

We will fill the stands. It will happen. Just give KC a reason.
While i agree with your take, im just not optimistic anymore.

We say this same stuff over and over every year and it never happens.

Dayton Moore having a bunch of Depth in the minors is like a FAT GUY at a salad bar. With all the healthy choices to make you know he is just going eat bacon bits and destroy any chance at a successful meal.

DM has made some good decisions when it comes to position players. However I think he has been a total and complete fail when it comes to pitching. Our best pitcher is a #5 in reality. Maybe a #4 and at best a #3 if he ever becomes consistent. Other than that a few lucky situations, if that, sucha s Paulino. Sanchez was ****ing terrible. We knew he was a high risk yet you trade away a guy who tearing shit up in the league for a guy you don't even have on your team any longer.

The bigger problem with this team is what we have seen over the last week. Yuni DFA'd because of attitude. It isn't like we didn't know who Yuni was. Majares literally given away because of attitude. Nevermined he was one of our better relief pitchers, his previous reputation smacked of bad attitude, so WTF? The you fir our 1st base coach because? And the seed that seemed to start all this was telling the players they couldn't talk to the competition. WTF is this, little league baseball? Theny ou call up Jeffress and Abreu and leave Myers and Gio sitting in the minors. Now I am not baseball pro, especially when it comes to front office stuff, so I am sure there are legit reasons for all of this. It's just painfully obvious those reason have absolutely nothing to with actually winning.

Eh, for a left handed specialists who is just supposed to pitch to one or two guys to get them out he has not been good. In his last four outings he has given up 5 ER and recorded only 3 outs plus 2 more inherited runners scoring.

So has everyone else in our pen, generally speaking. I am just saying overall he has been one of the better ones. And since our starters usually can't stay on the mound past 5 innings we need all the pen help we can get.

Well given our starting pitching we need people that can eat an entire inning and not just pitch to one batter. They have been trying to stretch him out and he has failed miserably. I wouldn't hate it if he were still here but it doesn't bother me that he isn't.

It's not that he isn't here. It's the way they got rid of him and the reasoning behind such. We knew about his attitude before we signed him. The entire league did. Yet we signed him them "give" him away because of a poor attitude. Same with Yuni in which case we had first hand knowledge.

I've never heard of needing innings-eaters in the pen.

Long relief guys like Mendoza are sometimes considered that I guess. Of course he has to start because everyone else gets hurt.

Excellent point. Any decent pitching staff should need their pen for 2 innings. 3 at the very tops. I've never liked the whole starter\setup\closer mentality anyway. Call me old school. You ahve starters and you have firemen. It's that simple. Perhaps with a bias for someone to finish out a game.

But this 6 inning "quality start", 100 pitch countm bs is just that. You're a ****ing starter. It's your game until you get into trouble and can't pitch out of it. Then you bring in a fireman and he pitches until he gets in trouble. None of this, this guy pitches one inning, that guy pitches one inning then we have a closer come in despite how good the other guy in front of him may have been doing.

True. But those are specially designated guys. Need one, maybe two. Mijares certainly wasn't asked or needed to fill this role.

**** it. He's gone. /Major League

I thinkt he entire "quality start" stat is totally bunk anyway. I think it permeates a mindset in pitchers these days that their job is just to throw for 6 innings and only allow X runs. BS! You're job is to throw until you either win or get knocked out of the game with a some gray area, of course.
