2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

According to Dutton, the only untouchable starters we have are Salvador Perez and Escobar.

Out of our prospects, Myers is almost untouchable, but we're listening.

I have to believe something is going to happen within the next 6 days, right? If we were going to cut Hoch absent a 3rd pitching acquisition, we would have already done so and protected another guy from the rule V draft.

Here's my top 20 (personal opinion, gleaned from comparing Top 10s in various places and also from individual scouting reports on several of the players that I've either read or heard)

1. Wil Myers. This is obvious.
2a. Jake Odorizzi. Impressed me a bit down the stretch. His breaking ball is more of an out pitch than I expected. Fly ball tendencies not a huge problem in KC.
2b. Kyle Zimmer. He'd be clear-cut No. 2 if he had a little more minor league track record/no elbow surgery (bone chip removal). Probably will be No. 1 by June 1 (as Odo and Myers will be on the MLB roster)
4. Bubba Starling. Huge athleticism. Only worry right now is his K rate (1/3 of at-bats). Still, profiles as a Drew Stubbs type (even if the Ks remain crazily high)
5. Aldaberto Mondesi. Raul's kid was incredibly impressive in rookie ball as a 16-year-old. Jurickson Profar-lite.
6. John Lamb. Lefty is coming back from TJ surgery, but I believe in his recovery. Was getting guys out at AA in 2010 with a popped UCL. I expect him to him tick up a few MPH (TJ-effect) and still have the great pitchability and demeanor. Change-up is very good. If curve becomes more consistent, he's a true No. 1 starter. Without it, more of a No. 2. (Think Cole Hamels).
7. Yordano Ventura. Love his arm. Just wish he was a tad bit bigger.
8. Orlando Calixte. He's not going to stick at SS, but I could see him moving to 2B and becoming a real asset. Expect him to have a monster year in Northwest Arkansas, which is a hitter's haven. Put up a .752 OPS (with very good power) at age 20 in the terrible hitting environment in Wilmington.
9. Jorge Bonifacio. I love this kid. Power is going to come. Great approach, very advanced for his age. Also likely headed for Northwest Arkansas next year.
10. Kyle Smith. Little righty doesn't have much projection left, but doesn't need it. Stuff is pretty good, profiles as an OK No. 3 starter upside.
11. Sam Selman. Dominated the Pioneer League, but it's the Pioneer League. Control will be the question with him. If he displays MLB-average control, he's a No. 2 type.
12. Mike Montgomery. How the mighty have fallen. In 2011, he struggled but still displayed great stuff. In 2012, he struggled and had stuff slip as he tried to make adjustments. Still has time to figure it out...
13. Cheslor Cuthbert. He was the youngest guy in his league and struggled, accordingly. Has an advanced approach and good plate discipline, and the power looks like it should be there. he was aggresively promoted and will be better for it if he can bounce back.
14. Jason Adam. Just doesn't miss enough bats to see more than a No. 4 or No. 5 starter, in my opinion.
15. Elier Hernandez. Still believe in his potential, long-term.
16. Angel Baez. Have heard rave reviews about his stuff/upside.
17. Cam Gallagher. If he can stick behind the plate, is a Mike Napoli sort. Big power. Could be a nice guy to have around in 2015 and beyond as a backup catcher/DH/1B sort who still gets in 100 games.
18. Patrick Leonard. HUGE power. If he sticks at 3B, the 30-HR power from the right side will make him a very nice prospect.
19. Miguel Almonte. Again, rave reviews. Arm/projectability.
20. Christian Binford. Very athletic 6-7 guy. Reminds me a bit of Michael Wacha, the Cardinals first round pick out of Texas A&M.

Passan had an article up last night talking about how the Royals were shopping Myers for a top of the line starter...he then brought up TB and specifically James Shields.

I swear if Dayton did something moronic like that...

Just hope he doesn't panic and deal Myers for anything less than an ace.

This is the single dumbest shit I've read with respect to a Myers trade. If he's moved for prospects, there won't be enough hateful things to say about Dayton ****ing Moore.

I know you're reading this, Moore, you stupid mother****er you, and you better wake the **** up and raise the white flag on a couple of sunk costs (Frenchy and Hoch), keep your top prospect (Myers), and move pitching prospects, the lot of them if you want.

The Royals just need to sack up and spend: Greinke, Marcum, Anibal Sanchez, Jackson - pay one of them.

Not only is it dumb shit, it flies in the face of what everyone else is saying.

The Royals are NOT moving Myers for pitching prospects. The only way a prospect is involved is to finish off a trade. If they move him, creating some depth in their pitching candidates is something to take into consideration, too.

Myers for James Shields - which is probably what the Rays want to do - isn't going to work. But if its Myers for James Shield, Chris Archer and, say, Taylor Guierri, that might get it all the way there.
