*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Well my old broken ass hit two PR's on sumo deads tonight. Lewdog threw some technique critique out on one of my older videos, so I figured why the **** not just max out since it was my 1+ rep week on 5/3/1.

My previous max was 500 conventional stance, I switched to sumo about 8 weeks ago to work more on my glute/hams and have more carryover to squat. Well I hit a squat PR monday of 435 and tonight smashed 530 & 550 on the sumo.

I know its not much compared to what some of you younger beasts are throwing around, but when your 35 you just want to make sure whatever your training style is, its injury free lol! My new goals before my second daughter gets here are 350 bench, 480 squat and 600 dead, so i have till end of august.

Anyway, here is a vid. Feel free to throw some form critique out. I normally dont yell but I was pretty ****ing pumped after this hah!

Lewdog thanks for the tips big man!

I don't think any of them say just CF, most of the better guys I know workout twice a day, sometimes three. Froning does three most days. Usually strength in the morning, WOD afternoon and another WOD or some kind of conditioning in the evening.

Most of the strength workouts are linear progression, bench, squat, DL and cleans.

I've been working out a long time, but until you do CF, you will not understand. I don't do all of the lifts for various reasons. A few summers ago I was doing CF 2-3 times a week and regular lifting the other 2-3. No I wasn't in the best shape of my life, but I'm 47, but I was in the best shape I had been in 20 years. At my age it's a great supplement to regular work, I do what I can and work around what I can't, it's great for me!

Do you actually believe the Mr O, Arnold and all the other competitions are drug free? As well as football at the college and professional level? I'm not saying the CF guys are or are nit, because I don't know. I can tell you none of them are as thick or heavy as competition body builders, but in phenomenal condition and it shows their muscularity.

They wouldn't want to look like a comp bodybuilder anymore than a collegiate or pro football player would.

Um where did I say that? Everyone knows the IFBB drug testing policy isn't really followed. They are clearly on 'roids. As are many individuals in any sport that rewards monetary value. And clearly we know college athletes aren't clean either. Money is to be made atthe next level and sometime even just some kid looking to have a the season of his life makes the jump. Didn't I make that clear pretty much stating that every sport is "dirty" and Crossfit is no exception, especially at the top of the leader board?

Which would explain why they're all on something lol

What do you mean "you will not understand?" I understand how it works. I know how the good gyms do actual programming followed by conditioning. That still doesn't mean that high-rep Olympic lifts are a good thing. But not all gyms do this. I get it.

I would suspect that most of the hate toward Crossfit is directed at the "My warmup is your workout" crowd bullshit and those that praise rhabdo as a good thing. Fortunately, I think this has gotten severely watered down simply as a matter of the numbers of participants in Crossfit has risen. Less stupidity per capita.

No one thinks these guys are drug free. NO ONE. Except maybe Sac.

Everyone knows that they're on something. They get called out CONSTANTLY. You don't even have to be Mr. Olympia to get called out on PEDs. Even if you're just a quasi-fitness celeb doing YouTube videos, if you're on something, people will call you out.

It's not specific to Crossfit. People call out the juicers in EVERY aspect of fitness and BB.

That's not exactly how you phrased it. You made it sound very different from that.

But it still doesn't detract from the overall point that those guys are held up as examples of the type of body one can get from Crossfit, when it's really an example of what working out hard while on the right drugs can get you.

That's ****ing impressive shit. I could maybe squeak out about 10-12lbs of muscle a year when I was younger. This dude is in his 30's and just beastin' the muscle mass all while being vegan!
You guys have the reading comprehension level of a drunk monkey.

I stated that I went vegan 14 months ago, dropped from 225 to 176 in about five weeks due to the dietary change combined with being sick as a dog. From that point to about five weeks ago I gained back approximately 20 lbs. as the body adjusted to the new vegan diet.

The only exercising I have done over the past four years was irregular (once to three times a week) body weight workouts (pushups, pullups, dips, etc.) Previous to that I did go to the gym on a somewhat regular basis and have trained powerlifting as my brother was competing in it for a time as well as worked out with guys who've competed in bodybuilding contests though I've never taken my workouts or diets to that required level. I've also just done body weight workouts for periods of time.

I started going back to the gym about five weeks ago weighing approximately 195-200 lbs. I just weighed myself for the first time since then two days ago and I was at 214.8 lbs.

I was excited that I was able to not only maintain a weight level, but add to it while doing physical work/on my feet all day long and then going to the gym afterwards while on a vegan diet.

At this point, I'm going to try to maintain a steady mass build for the next little while to see if I can get up to the 225/230 range and then cut down from there to 200/205 and be around 10-12% bodyfat.

I also did not say that you can get huge by just doing Crossfit. I simply asked if anyone knew anything about it as the dudes looked pretty good who were "competing" in their Games.

And who said anything about my age?
