U.S. Rep. Steve King: If not for rape and incest, 'would there be any population left

U.S. Rep. Steve King: If not for rape and incest, 'would there be any population left?'

Robin Opsahl

Rep. Steve King told an Iowa crowd Wednesday that humanity might not exist if not for rape and incest throughout human history.

"What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?" he said at the Westside Conservative Club in Urbandale, Iowa. "Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages taken place and whatever happened to culture after society I know I can't certify that I'm not a part of a product of that."

The Republican was discussing his defense of not allowing exceptions for rape and incest in the anti-abortion legislation he tried to pass in Congress. Republican leadership had prevented bills he sponsored on banning abortions from advancing through the House, despite GOP support for the measures, King said.

Rest is at the link.

Rape culture was invented when a cave woman ****ed a cave man because he managed to chase down a gazelle and the berry pickings were slim that season.

If you value all human life I don't think sounding like a dumb ass is a smart way to get your point across.

And, sometimes, what seems like dumbassery is profound speech. This seems to fall somewhere near "could have been said much more artfully, but makes a point" on the axis. This particular Steve King is obviously not one of the era's great wordsmiths.

I don't understand what's offensive about this. It's kind of a dumb point, but it's a point about reverance for all innocent life not a pro rape comment.

I think there is an emotional response that interprets the sentiment as 'hey, rape's not so bad. It's happened a lot, and in the end we have a lot of people.'

Critics would [probably rightly, all things considered] say 'that's awful dismissive of all the pain that occurred in all those rapes.'

Those predisposed to cancel King on general principle would just say he's callous about rape and incest. Those more forgiving would still have to admit he's overly clinical, bordering on autistic, about the traumas of the past.

Ahh, Steve King, the gift that keeps on giving. Steve was a member of AKL at Northwest Missouri back in the late 60s.

Our national chapter started pulling all references to him from the alumni magazine after he started saying stupid shit like this a while back.
