Why don’t more teams do this?

So I looked up Shady’s best game from last year, which was in New York against the Jets.

I’m watching the game, and of course he looks great — and Claiborne looks good for the Jets so it’s kind of nice.

Buffalo is wrecking the Jets here, and halfway through the 2nd quarter they go up 24-0 by throwing to their right tackle, who was eligible.

The defense had nobody on him, despite the fact he was eligible. The DE who zipped by him didn’t realize he was becoming a receiver until it was too late.

Which is a way to freeze up DEs, isn’t it? Claim your tackles as eligible receivers, whether they are or not, and force DEs to second guess themselves if they whizz by the tackles.

I don’t know, it probably wouldn’t be much of an advantage. But why not just always declare your OL as eligible? What does it cost? Why not do it every single time and have that one thing always in your pocket?

By the way, even in this game, McCoy’s best, make no mistake: Buffalo’s OL is about on par with the 2008 Chiefs line. It’s that atrocious.

Seemed like we used to do this from time to time back in the Marty days with Joe Valerio.

Right. And we actually did it a couple times under Reid when we had Donald Stephenson.

But why JUST time to time? Why not always have them all eligible?

Takes another wr/te/rb off the field, no? Or at least makes one of them ineligible

This is why. How often does it benefit your offense more to remove an actual skill position player? Also, you won't always hear the announcement, especially from the TV, that someone has reported "tackle eligible". Unless the announcer is really on it, you won't notice the eligibility report unless the pass actually goes to the tackle. Even then, the announcer will usually say something after the fact, "he did report eligible."

Well even with that atrocious team and line Larry Johnson averaged 4.5 YPC and Jamaal averaged 5.3. I wonder why McCoy could only run for 3.2 ypc behind an equally bad line? Maybe it's because he's washed up and sucks and good RBs can still be productive behind bad lines?

Maybe he just wasn't 100% healthy. Maybe all that time playing for shitty Buffalo just wore him down. Who knows. But if he's not effective and other guys are, other guys will get the ball more. To me, this is a low risk high reward move.

Yep. And with the weapons and QB we have, we don't "need" to do it. It's like the Dontari Poe "Big Pig" package.....we didn't exactly have the pure offense in Alex's early days that we have now, so throw in some curveballs.

You're necessarily removing an offensive weapon from the field if you have a T lined up on the end of the line of scrimmage. With a team like the Chiefs, it makes almost zero sense.

Why would declaring a tackle elidigble take someone off the field? Are you only allowed to have a certain number of players eligible to receive? 4wr, 1 TE, 2 RB's ??????

I was thinking about the Dontari Poe TD too lol. Seems like the type of thing we'll do when we're up by 40 on Oakland and want to rub it in by having Mahomes throw a no looker to Schwartz.
