The last weight of failure has been lifted from our long-burdened shoulders. Gather 'round the ol' CP camp fire and get your rep on for the departure of the old, and the inauguration of the new!

This is also an opportunity for you to TRULY test your armchair GM skills against the Chiefs. I invite you to put your talent evaluation, contract negotiation, and balls of steel on the table, and let's find out a year from now if you truly have the ability to read the tea leaves and set a more productive course for this team.

As for me, I've never seen the Chiefs be so productive and proactive in my entire time as a fan. If you would have told me that we would enter this off season doing everything I wanted to see done for this team going forward after the AFCCG loss, I would not have believed you. To say the least.

As I sit here at my desk with zero pessimism after damned near two decades of Chiefs football, I have to ask myself; is this what football Zen feels like? And if it is, will I be able to survive it? After all, I and many others absolutely thrive on strife and confrontation in this realm. Someone once said, "once the Chiefs draft a QB, you'll just find something new to bitch about". But, I'm running out of ammo here folks! This is one hell of a ride.

I know CP isn't a collective mind, and some will still disagree with me, but the vast majority of us asked, begged, prayed, and even threatened our very fan-hood (not me but there were some LOL takes for sure) for what has happened over the last few days. We went from being one of the most conservative teams in the league, I present to you the KHunt ordeal (I agreed with btw), to "Jesus Christ, did we really do that, that, and that???" It's been hard keeping up and I ****ing love it! While I am very pleased with the start of 2019, I'd also have been very skeptical of someone telling me this was actually going to happen.

I was born and raised a Chiefs fan from San Diego. My old man was from MO and his family still resides in STL and St. Charles. He was a die hard Chiefs fan and I was brought up with the same affliction. He at least had the (former) glory days, though. I've had year after year after year after year, etc, of crushing disappointment. He passed 8 years ago and sadly never got to see us get to the promised land again. I'm actually getting kinda worked up now as I wrote that, but anyway. I'm 35 and have never, EVER, been this excited about an off-season and upcoming regular season. Perhaps I'm setting myself up for another huge crash, ya know, because Chiefs, but **** me... I'm rocking out with my cock out over here and have been smiling like a ****ing reerun all week, bursting at the seams with joy.

To my brethren, I say how 'bout them CHIEEEEEFS?
To you bottom dwellers we call division rivals I say **** Donk FOREVER, **** you LA/ Oakland/ SF/ Vegas/ wherever the **** you are, and lastly, **** you... Don't we have another team in our division?

Think about this. In the Reid era, what player have we let go (in any fashion) that we actually regretted?

Jamaal-also done

Yep. And people forget Reid pulled off one of the, at the time, most scrutinized and ballsy trades in NFL history when he traded his starting quarterback to a DIVISION RIVAL!! Reid knew he was done and guess what? He was ****ing done! Until proven otherwise, if Reid thinks a guy is done or isn’t worth what the team would have to pay to keep him, I’m gonna trust Reid over some dudes on the internet.

They did things that had to be done, but they won't be better for it for a while.

We've been indulging the sunk cost fallacy for years. Now we're paying it off lump sum and moving in a different direction. It's a strategy for improvement, but it's gonna take time.

I'm hearing "giving up the pass rush" and "letting go of best players" along with various sundry bitching regarding contract specifications mixed with a dash of hindsight 20/20 on when we could have picked up prospective free agents earlier that are now in the fold.

As to items #1 and #2, I say that we were forewarned by the man himself that the outside was no longer going to be the emphasis for the rush, and this was before Spags had even set foot in the building if I recall correctly. So getting bent out of shape over Dee Ford based on outside rushing specifically is a moot point. And that's me removing his injury issues from the table altogether.

As to Houston, though he was and is the more complete defender of the two, he is also a textbook case in exactly what the Chiefs need to be doing going forward with our "stars"; get the very best out of them and cut bait before they bleed you dry with injuries, cost, and lesser performance. Unfortunately, our cap situation was so shitty we didn't really have the ability or option of waiting the market out in an attempt to get compensation, nor could we continue to pay him at his contracted level any longer.
On the other side of that coin( and this applies to Ford as well ), it would have been a gamble to keep him with all that it entailed, and then hope that he would be able to make the transition to a 4-3 DE. As far as I'm concerned, you can just flip a coin in the air and make your call on Houston; what's done is done and we'll just have to wait and see how much money he can pull from the market and how productive he will be with his new team.

I'm not discussing Berry. Too much time has been spent there already and there are other threads available for that topic. Enough!

The contract work will have to get better but it looks like we're willing to do that and not get stomped on, but you can't view these deals in a vacuum either. Throughout this process, I've seen far too much singular finger-pointing at Veach as if he were operating in some undisclosed, secret bunker where he and only he was making the decisions in regards to who we were going to pursue, who we were going to release, and how much we were going to pay for services and for what length of time. Though he is the representative of the franchise for contract negotiations, he isn't the only man involved in the process. The Chiefs don't just turn over the keys to the house and say, "we're going on vacation buddy, do the best you can while we're out"!
I have faith in Veach until I don't. And if he kills it at the draft, then I won't lament the passing of Dorsey or any other GM that the Chiefs have seen fit to hire.

Agreed. I'd be far more worried if we were 100% selling out instead of building. I believe this process of ours will flow much more smoothly after that first championship though.
But even then, I just don't like that gamble unless the depth is acceptable across the board. And right now, it's not.

I don't think it will take nearly as much time as people think. A new scheme and new players could start to reap benefits immediately.

Agreed. While we technically can get worse, though we set the bar pretty freaking high last year, I sincerely doubt we will. I think those gut wrenching losses, specifically the AFCCG, we're exactly what the franchise needed. I truly believe that will be the defining moment in Chiefs history

It had to be done. Our defense was shit last year and 2 guys had a shit ton of money tied up. They obviously weren't firing up the rest of the defense to perform better, it was time to move on. We need to hit on our first 3 draft picks though, we need starters. The defense could very well be worse than last year if we don't but hopefully a new DC will make a big enough difference and if we have good drafts and if some guys from last years draft end up being good we'll be alright.

I'm not sure if it had to be done in the massacre-ish style in which it's been done, but I get it and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as they build out the roster over the next 6 weeks. As someone said in another thread, not gonna be a lot of tape on our defense!

I'm OK and actually happy we've shed Ford and Berry. Ford was a one trick pony and he was the reason we're not SB champs. 13 sacks is NOT a GREAT stat. Berry was a waste of a roster spot the last two years period. Losing Houston somewhat bothers me. He's a solid run defender, can set the edge and get you those big plays when needed. But, he's 30 and overpaid so I get it.

We're going to be young and fast on defense. If Spags brings the fire,scheme and aggressiveness and coaches up the players we'll be better.
