The whole key to the offseason right here

I brought this up in another thread, but I feel like it may warrant it's own.

IF you cut Houston, it costs you $7 million, (5.6 if you wait till June 2 but you kinda can't wait that long to free up the cash)

If you tag and keep Ford, it's going to cost you like $16 million.

So you've got $23 million conservatively wrapped up in one position: RDE.

IF you keep Houston at $21 million, and tag and trade Ford's $16 million,

you have $21 million in that RDE position. PLUS you get the pick for Ford, which will be I think a decent #2 and perhaps a low #1.

With the extra high pick, you draft a RDE somewhere in your 4 picks in the top 64, along with a CB, and a S.

You'll have enough for one, maybe two impact FA's and be set for next year, when you can cut Houston for only $1.5 dead cap.

I think we've been looking at this wrong; it's a net savings to keep HOUSTON and let FORD go. He's also the better all-around player.

Well, Nate Taylor's was more of playing a game of what could the Chiefs do. Matt Verderame, who's pretty decent, is suggesting he has sources. That being said, it could still be a shell game by the Chiefs... Who knows.

We've been talking about this for quite awhile. Catch up.
Spags can put them both in position to be effective at the same time. They don't both have to be RDE.

You're not going to replace either of them with better talent .

And I'm not reading through the whole thread to CATCH UP.

I feel like (other than latecomers who are several days behind in the conversation) we're focusing on the wrong things.

The point is not that Houston may or may not be refusing to restructure, it's that it may well be in our best interest NOT to restructure and just play him as is; and that it's cheaper to do so than to cut him and pay Ford-AND that you're going to get a high pick from a tag and trade with Ford.

We eat the $21 m this year, we can cut him next year and save $18 in cap room. So maybe...like...you sign Landon Collins, structure the deal so that his cap hit is low this year, and high next year, which you can afford because you cut Houston and save $18 m, see what I'm saying?

then don't join a conversation that's been going on for days and weeks.

I mean you're literally the guy at the party that walks up to a group of guys that have been talking and just starts blurting shit out when everyone else has already worked through the next 8 steps in logic.

I just don't know if Ford would bring a high draft pick anyway after only 1 good year.

well, we've been over that many times as well.

General consensus is somewhere around a #2 is pretty likely, possibly a late #1 or some package that roughly gets in that value ballpark.

He'd literally be last season's most celebrated pass rusher to hit the market. There would certainly be interest as long as his back passes doctors' inspection.

and everybody thinks it'd be nice to keep them both, but nobody that's looked at the cap numbers has come to the conclusion that you can keep them both and do anything at all in Free agency. Which means you'll probably have to start 3 or 4 rookies or trot like...Eric Murray out there again. I don't think we want that. Nelson's probably going to get a deal for like $12 m or so. We literally couldn't even afford to bring back NELSON if we keep Ford and Houston. how sad is that?

So one's gotta go. This thread is just my theory about which one and why.

I apologize if I was a little snippy, I was just putting a complete idiot on ignore in another thread and I was jumping back and forth.

If Berry and Houston are a package deal in a sense, I’d like to get rid of Houston and Berry both as opposed to just Ford. Appreciate them both for what they’ve done but their best days are behind them as players.

Well, we may be stuck with Berry. But who knows?

As for Houston; it's him or Ford. Houston actually comes out to be a better deal. And I think he's a better all-around player.

But that's the discussion, for sure.

Been mocking tag and trade Ford with a 2nd to GB for #30 and a 4th for a bit now and I think it's entirely possible.

I'd also consider cutting or trading Houston if you can get a guy like Preston Smith in here. He's projected around $11 per, which is fairly reasonable given he's extremely productive at generating pressures and playing the run. That'd net a sizeable return in cap space, probably about $6m per over the next couple years.

The Berry thing is weird. If he hasn’t had surgery yet, I feel like he will be let go. But I hope things don’t get too ugly. It sucks that it’s unfolded this way.

Those two were supposed to be apart of a Super Bowl winner here. Much like DJ, or Hali.... and it just didn’t happen.

I think ford and a 2nd is way too much for 30 and a 4th.

I agree.

to me, the question is, would you rather have Houston and a #2 (possibly a late #1) or would your rather have one more season of Ford?

With the new coaching staff on defense, I expect the run defense to be much improved with or without Ford. With that in mind, for me, I keep him because he’s such a dangerous pass rusher.
