KCChiefs.com: Belser signed to a two year deal

From KCChiefs.com

Kansas City Native S Jason Belser Agrees to Terms of a Two-Year Contract with Chiefs

JUN 11 (afternoon)--Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that free agent defensive back Jason Belser has agreed to terms of a two-year contract with the club. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed. A native of Kansas City, Belser played high school football at Raytown South High School and is the son of former Chiefs defensive back, Ceasar Belser.
Belser (5-9, 196) is entering his 10th NFL season after spending his previous nine years in Indianapolis. He has played in 141 regular season NFL contests with 126 starts at defensive back, recording 979 tackles (628 solo) and intercepting 13 passes returning them 293 yards. He added 9.0 sacks (-59.0 yards), 63 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Belser also started six postseason games with the Colts. He recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and half a sack (-2.0 yards). His best year with the Colts came in ’96 when he had a career high 129 tackles (69 solo) starting 16 games. He intercepted a career-high four passes (81 yards) with two touchdowns and added five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and got his first career sack. He also saw action in the postseason for the Colts that year starting one game making 11 tackles.

Originally the Colts first pick in the eighth round (197th overall) of the ’92 NFL Draft, Belser recorded a career-high 5.0 QB sacks (-25.0 yards) last season. He was credited with 115 tackles (80 solo), six passes defensed, a forced fumble a fumble recovery. He blocked a 49-yard field goal vs. Washington (12/19/99) and a PAT at the N.Y. Jets (10/20/98).

Belser is a second-generation defensive back for the Chiefs. His father, Cesar, played defensive back for Kansas City from ‘68-71 and was a member of the Chiefs Super Bowl IV squad in ’69. The younger Belser was a prep standout at Raytown South High School where he played running back, cornerback, safety, kicker and punter. The Kansas City, Missouri, native was born May 28, 1970. Belser and his wife, Sarita reside in Indianapolis, Indiana.

A product of the University of Oklahoma, Belser became only the second defensive back in school history to have 200 career tackles with 214 (140 solo). He added 16 passes defensed, 13 interceptions (216 yards) with one TD, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 3.0 sacks (-22.0 yards).

I believe it's a good pickup, and I also believe we've probably signed our last FA unless Poole comes at a reasonable price. I like the new look. I think we'll be better than most "experts" predict for us this year. :D

old_geezer, the AP is reporting that Keith Poole signed with the Broncos. Maybe that's why we went ahead and signed Belser.

I don't get it. Is this simply more "depth", or is this guy expected to unseat Woods or Wesley?

At this point I'm not sure if he's played one safety position hie entire career, or both.

I see more glaring needs than safety...I'm still waiting for a decent CB with experience. I guess that's out of the question.

We had one experienced backup at the safety position on the roster before this move, that being Bracey Walker.

We have at least seven cornerbacks on the roster right now.

A decent cornerback with experience isn't available anywhere that I'm aware of (eric davis is the only name I can think of, and I don't like him), and if there is one out there, he's going to cost significantly more than we can afford.

I wish we'd signed someone other than Crockett, too, but that's what we're stuck with...

I just read in Vermiel's 6/11 interview on kcchiefs.com that Belser will most likely be competing for the third or fourth safety spot.

Also, for those interested this was also in the interview:

Q: (WR) Mickael Ricks played some tight end today, is that right ?

VERMEIL: "We moved him in there to work him as we do Tony (Gonzalez), especially in a pass offense. He did well. We're working on it and plan to take it into camp and see how it works. He's almost 240 pounds now."

Q: Was (WR) Snoop Minnis doing a little work with the first team today ?

VERMEIL: "Yeah, we're going to get him more reps with it. We might work (WR) Sylvester (Morris) some at the "Z" position too, because he's going to have to learn to play both spots (flanker, split end.)

Interesting. I proposed moving to Ricks a few months ago (prior to drafting Baber) because of his size and (I believe) he'd played the position some in college.

Still, I can't imagine we have room for that many tight ends on the roster...

Just in case people have questions about this signing, and to further Keg's point, consider the two names of the guys who were backing up our safeties the first day of camp and tell me you'd be confident going into the season with that:
At the first day of their second mini-camp Monday, Kansas City's backups to starters Jerome Woods and Greg Wesley were Bracey Walker at strong safety and Brad Trout, a first-year player from Valdosta State, at free. The 31-year-old Belser, who has started 126 of his 141 NFL games, would give Kansas City proven depth at either of the safety positions.
