Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Disregard. I was thinking of the safety lever, which acts as a dust cover for the chamber like on the M-4. You are talking about the dust cover that goes over the entire receiver.

so if you're going DI instead of Piston, how much cleaning are we talking about?

are we talking a complete tear down of the upper/bolt carrier group/firing pin, etc?

I think you need to tear down the bcg every thousand rounds or so to clean up.But that is also about inspecting the parts for wear etc. The rifle should go several thousand rounds reliably. Run it wet! It helps make cleaning easier and improves reliability.

On an AR? Yep, all of the above, plus the inside of the upper and lower receiver and the star chamber, each and every time. Will also need to pull the buffer every now and again, and clean the trigger group with some pipe cleaners.

yeah, on an AR.

thanks.
Doesn't sound too bad. although, I now see why some don't like running dirty ammo etc. But, I typically clean my pistols after each range visit, and would do the same with the AR (whenver I get to building one).

Does dirty ammo gunk up the internals really bad?

Not sure if you mean dirty exterior, which is pretty much the same for all rifles, or cheap ammo that leaves a lot of residue. I can't say that I've ever shot cheap Russian ammo through an AR, but my guess is that the more crud you force through it, the more carbon and residue will end up in the rifle.

For a real good time, put on a blank adaptor and run a couple hundred blanks through it.

Inside dirty. Just wasn't sure if throwing some Russian ammo through it if it would dirty it up (interior) more than regular ammo. If the difference is negligible, it would be great due to the price difference in ammo.
I would imagine i would probably toss 200 rounds through it at a range trip -...but that's a wild arse guess. I usually run about 250 with my pistols per trip.

I would NOT, and I mean absolutely NOT, run cheap ass Russian ammo through my AR. Not just dirty firing, but dirty to the touch. After loading two magazines for my AK my thumb and index fingers were black with grime. No biggie for an AK, but an AR isn't going to deal with that as well.

I disagree. I would DEFINITELY run the Russian stuff through your AR. I would also 'unexpectedly' need to leave the range before cleanup time.

Your rifle, your call. But I'll pay the extra couple of bucks per box for mine.
