The Greatest Movie Franchises of All Time - Play-in Round

For a bit of offseason entertainment, I will be hosting a poll series tournament to determine the Greatest Movie Franchises of All Time. Nominations were collected in this thread in the media center, and they were seeded based on their estimated ticket sales on Box Office Mojo. Nominees that had no data were randomly assigned a value generally in the range of the other nominees. You can view the full list of nominees and associated data here.

We had a total of 83 nominees, which means we need to eliminate 19 of them to get us down to 64 for the tournament bracket. In this round, we're going to do it all at once to figure out which of the bottom 39 make it in, so please review the list and vote for any you feel are deserving to be in the conversation for Greatest Movie Franchise of All Time. The top 20 will be selected for the tournament bracket in a few days.

You'll be able to follow the entire tournament bracket (including those that have already been seeded) as we progress here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=633401577

Possible Concerns and Responses:
  1. A franchise I like isn't on the list! Too bad. Nominations are closed. This is just a fun offseason diversion, but feel free to complain in the thread if it will make you feel better.
  2. There's something on the list that I don't even think is a franchise! Don't vote for it.
  3. There's something on the list that I don't recognize. Yeah, there are a few that I don't recognize either. If you feel generous, look it up and determine if you think it's worthy. Or just don't vote for it. Either option is allowed.

Begin!

This is tough because there are a lot of them that I like a single one of the movies, but as a whole in terms of the whole franchise, doesn't stack up.

Predator with Arnold is one of my all timers, but the series as a whole has been ****ed around a lot.

I was pretty generous with my votes. If I generally had warm fuzzy feelings about it, I voted for it. With a field of 64 in the tournament, it's highly unlikely all of them are going to be legit contenders, but who knows when a 16 might surprise us and beat a 1.

Yeah, I threw my votes that I personally liked for the most part, not franchises that I think are staples of the industry. But that will happen at this level.

I'm a discerning viewer, so I didn't pick very many. I went with ...

Planet of the Apes - Assuming this is both the classic movies and the new ones.

Alien - Great flicks from top to bottom

Clint Eastwood's orangutan films - I like Sondra Locke. Sue me.

Abbott and Costello - These are important early works in comedy. Everyone should watch them.

Police Academy - I have a warm spot for these movies because a wonderful thing happened to me once while I was watching one of them. A girlfriend that I couldn't stand broke up with me, and it improved my life immensely. Plus...Bubba Smith.

Halloween - I have a warm spot for these movies because on my second date ever, I took a girl to see the original Halloween. I didn't like the movie that much, but the girl was cute.

Vacation - These are American classics, and the newest one with Christina Applegate and that guy from the office is hilarious.

My definition of "greatest" is the one I liked the most. So that's how I'm voting.

O.City notes an inherent challenge in that most franchises have some clunkers, so do you vote for the average or do you vote for the ones with the best high points or something else? My rule is going to be "Which franchise would be most disappointing to me if it never existed?".

I really wish vBulletin had a sort function so that I wouldn't have to copy and paste everything into Excel to get a list. But anyway, here's the current sorted list:

I should mention that, if we end up with a tie for the last spot (which we have now), I'll use the original seeding in the spreadsheet as a tiebreaker. (Ditto for any other ties throughout the tournament.)

Although I doubt it exists, a scene involving mass death (be it zombies or not) to the tune of Neil Sedaka "Laughter In The Rain" would certainly sway my vote...

It's technically only two votes out of a tie for making it in, so things could change. I'll plan to set all of these polls for 2-day windows, so whatever comes in before the deadline counts.

Personally, I didn't even know what it was until it was nominated.

This is just the poll to get us down from 83 nominees to 64. The top 44 are already in and seeded (and Bond is a 2 seed in the Midwest division). Link in the OP.

I needed 2 movies that I found watchable.

So John Wick made it, despite only having 2.

Predator did not, despite making like 7 of them, because only 1 of them is any good.
