It's because they brought it back in 2009 for the 50 year anniversary. So really, it's only been around for 11 years in recent history. It was a throwback to the old days before Arrowhead I think.

It's the least problematic thing to get rid of IMO. But, give em and inch...

I know I’m beating a dead horse here, but the name is not owned by natives nor is it even meant to be offensive to them. If anything they stole it from white people given they use it now. Chief is what white people called their leaders from their own word meaning leader of a group. It wasn’t even meant to be disrespectful.

But if the name must change let’s just make it more native and use actual native words for their leaders. A few I’ve found are Sachem and Ha’wiih. Not sure which one has a better ring to it.

Funny I started going to games around that time. Pretty much wrnt to at least one game each year from about 06-14.

Can't say I've ever seen it on TV either. Just not a big deal.

That's why they're getting rid of it. It's going to cause the least amount of controversy with the fans (GEHA field is another example).

When they choose to get rid of the chop, that's when we'll be in for a collision course for sure.

Umm do you think that teams are changing their name or getting rid of Native American imagery for no reason?

There’s absolutely push for them to do so, and yes it’s from a relatively small group of people, which makes it all the more silly.

Saw someone suggested moving towards a Fire Chiefs type theme. Use a fire ax as a symbol (chop), fire truck replaces War Paint.... I've heard worse ideas.

"Oh my god. I loved Warpaint. That was a really important part of my Arrowhead experience." No One, Ever

I realize many of you subscribe to the "give them an inch and they'll take a mile" mindset, but I don't think that's where the Chiefs are. I think they're doing everything they can to placate 'the offended' by getting rid of the lowest hanging fruit and hoping that suffices while being able to credibly say they've been working with the relevant community. I don't think that's often an available option for a lot of corporations that are forced to change course abruptly. And I think it's smart on the part of the organization to be operating like this rather than blindly burying its head in the sand and hoping it can weather the storm.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-horse-mascot/

Quote:
Team president Mark Donovan said Monday the Chiefs have no plans to change the nickname, but the franchise is moving away from a popular tradition some Native Americans consider offensive.

“We have a really good American Indian working group that provides us real guidance and feedback — perspective on this issue,” Donovan said, via Charles Goldman of USA Today. “Obviously, we knew about the Cleveland decision a year plus ago, so we knew this was going to happen. [It] doesn’t really change our approach. We’re going to continue to create opportunities to educate, create awareness and work exactly as we have over the past eight years now with the working group. We’ve expanded our working group, to get more voices. As I’ve said before, one of the things you find within the American Indian community, which is not unlike any community, is there are divergent views. You’re going to find someone who believes one thing and someone who believes just as strongly in the other. That’s true within the American Indian community. It’s also true when it comes to these issues.”
So please, take Warpaint. Gladly. Take the dumb headresses people wear to games. I'll trade those a million times over for a better shot at keeping Arrowhead and the Chiefs.

This is a good development, folks. Half the people complaining in this thread probably didn't even know what Warpaint was until today.

I do remember it being around in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but we were pretty terrible then so it stayed in hiding quite a bit. IIRC, the old trading cards the police used to hand out to kids back in the day included one of Warpaint.

Lots of things are changing, and for a lot of reasons. Maybe society itself is changing. 30 years ago drunk driving was laughed at, now not so much.
