Oh Beto!

Details about the time Robert "Beto" O’Rourke, the Democrat Senate candidate in Texas, was driving drunk, caused an accident, and tried to flee the scene. That card.

Quote:

1998 Police Report: Witness Claimed Beto O’Rourke Tried To Leave The Scene Of His DWI Accident

The DWI was common knowledge already but his alleged attempt to flee the scene was not.

This would be a hugely damaging hit on the left’s new heartthrob if not for the fact that O’Rourke’s opponent happens to be the Zodiac whose father conspired to assassinate JFK.

Seriously, though, you know how Beto is forever being compared to the Kennedys? Turns out they’re more alike than anyone knew.

A Texas Department of Public Safety report on the incident was based on a motorist’s description of O’Rourke’s dark-colored Volvo passing him quickly about 3 a.m. on I-10. The Anthony Police Department and DPS reports differ as to whether O’Rourke was heading east or west on the interstate, but both agree that he struck a truck going in the same direction and crossed a grassy median into the opposite lanes.

Police said O’Rourke then attempted to leave the scene but was stopped by the same motorist he had just passed. The unidentified motorist “then turned on his overhead lights to warn oncoming traffic and to try to get the defendant (O’Rourke) to stop,” the report says.

The DPS report described O’Rourke as having “glossy” eyes, slurred speech, smelling of liquor, and almost falling to the ground as he got out of his car.

He blew in the range of .135 on the police breathalyzer when the state’s legal limit was .08. He was hauled in for DWI — but charges were dismissed when he completed a “diversion program” approved by the court. It helps to have a dad who was a judge at the time in El Paso, I guess

...

He told the NYT recently that he has no desire to be president, but that’s what they all say when they’re trying to climb the ladder to statewide office. If it doesn’t work out in Texas, he can always move to Massachusetts, start drunk-driving again, and be a senator there for the next 75 years.

This is pretty much offered to anyone on a first dui whether your dad is a Judge or not. Since he didn’t actually leave the scene I’m guessing that was the factor not disqualifying him for the diversion.

I heard once "politics makes strange bedfellows". I think it's a pretty old saying too.

Is that typically the case for DUI offenders who cause a wreck and attempt to leave the scene?

I think so mainly because he didn’t actually leave. Probably gave his lawyer from to argue some bs like “he was just confused from the accident and wandering in the wrong direction”.

If he had left a lot of jurisdictions would have denied him the diversion. Some might still have given it to him.

Main reason prosecutors do this is because most state laws allowing dui diversions also allow you to count it despite the dismissal for determining a second or third offense. So it counts even though it gets dismissed.

Duly noted, thanks. Count me among the crowd that will be glad when the campaign and election bullshit are behind us for another 2 years.

These things have all sorts of variables, including different state laws, existence and type of damage, and more.

What do our resident Hispanics think of O’Rourke adopting the nickname Beto?

His real first name is Robert for those who don’t know. Beto is a Hispanic nickname for Roberto and other Hispanic names.

And to be clear, he is in NO WAY hispanic. He never legally used the name Beto until it became politically expedient.

Beto is so much of a tragic joke to me that it would be funny if not for the fact that so many people take him seriously. I understand that many are simply supporting him because of hatred for Ted Cruz, that makes sense but few are honest about it. They have deluded themselves into thinking he is a qualified candidate.

For ****s sake, the guy is basically Poochie from the Simpsons.

I signed up for a Texas D regular email, so I get a text message every few weeks asking who I’m voting for. I always reply “I don’t know who Beto is”.

Hah, spot on. I’m curious why there is no outcry of cultural appropriation over this transparent attempt to garner the Hispanic vote by adopting that name?
