Lets play with this.

Assuming Samari Rolle and Ed Hartwell.....

Which is just speculation at this point.
What do you do with the draft?
Do you sign Smith? He could be a FS or a nickelback...

Do you move up and take DJ? Do you move down and take Pollard along with a OLB or a WR?

discuss.

I say you trade down a few spots, draft a DE in the first, a corner in the second, and a WR in the 3rd.

You (in the following order):

a) move up to take Derrick Johnson if he falls into "move-up" range

b) take a playmaker WR who falls to 15

or

c) trade down if you can find a partner to get a later 1st rounder and another 2nd round pick because, at least according to what I read, there are a lot of prime opportunities (relatively speaking) in this year's draft from the bottom half of the 1st through the 2nd round.

At some point, preferably no later than the 2nd round, take a CB.

But what the heck do I know?

Thanks for asking, My reasoning is this: I do not think we will draft any defensive players that will come in and get it done this year to the level we need. We could get lucky, but it does not happen very often.
If we get these aformentioned Free agents, they will turn our main weaknesses into strengths. The failures at CB and LB have put too much pressure on the rest of our defense, exposing it's youth, inexperience and lack of talent. I truly think the Defensive line will be better this year due to experience, I think Warfield is finally getting it. I think the other young linebackers can be directed and learn from a defensive QB like Hartwell. I do not think Greg Wesley got bad all of a sudden.
Now, this year we can draft the impact WR that was not available to us last year, we do not have one. We have "serviceable" WRs, young or old. Bo had one good year. The other kids have a lot of potential, I am most excited about Wilson and what he is capable of.
I don't think we can expect our OL to go through another relative injury free year and we need to get ready to replace them after they retire. Yes we have serviceable backups, but I do not think any of them will evolve into what we have now.
I am in this for the long haul and will always be their fan. However, like a lot of people have said, we gotta do it this year.
