Met Carl on the plane to NY.

I sat down and heard a distinctive voice one seat in front and across the aisle of me. I saw the hair. Ventured a guess and said “Nice off season, Carl”.

I seemed to have startled him. He looked around and thanked me. I’m sure that he gets a lot of comments and I didn’t want to be THAT guy who bugs the crap out him. Different circumstances maybe, but not on a noisy plane.

I thought for a moment, I figured I could comfortably ask him one question…

If you were in my shoes, what would have it been?

Naw, it was a small plane. It was only 3 seats wide...Continital Express. He declined the SNACK meal, but few minutes later broke out a hard boiled egg. He must be on the Atkins kick.

I should have mentioned in the header that this will turn into a Rich Scalon thread.

I thought what is our most needed area. Defense. When did our defense start to suck. In the last two years, the defense had been retooled and seemed to be making some progress, until Maz would go down. I don't have the specific facts but half way (give or take) after Maz was gone, our defense plummeted. So I asked Carl about Maz. He was one of my favorite players. Had a nose for the ball.

Carl thought that they really missed him and he was expected to return. But after NUMEROUS surgeries, didn't know. BUT he said, If I liked Maz, there is this young stud in NFL Europe named Rich Scalon. Carl seemed really high on him.

I found it humorus. I lurk here and know there is a lot of hype for Rich and teasing. Then the first and probably last time I talk to Carl...Rich comes up.
