Back to old ways Richardson is da man.
Richardson set to replace Holmes
Running back Priest Holmes, signed as a free agent in the offseason, may have lost his starting job after just one game. The Chiefs, who have used a committee in the backfield since Marcus Allen's retirement, are expected to split time between Holmes and Tony Richardson this weekend against the Giants, according to The Kansas City Star. The newspaper also reported that Richardson is likely to become the featured back. "We really don't have a running-back rotation," coach Dick Vermeil said. "It happens by formation rather than by play. The two rotate according to the rotation package." Holmes had seven carries for 22 yards in his debut against the Raiders. Don't know that I agree with this, but Richardson has the ability to move the chains. GO CHIEFS! Kansas City Chiefs Booster Club of Jacksonville, Florida. |

This is what I have forecasted from the day we signed Holmes...Not surprised but very disappointed in signing Holmes over Garner....

"The newspaper also reported that Richardson is likely to become the featured back."
If this is the case, why the hell did we obtain Holmes? |

This is not news folks, we've been splitting carries between the two since training camp started, the only item of interest here is that it shows how little ESPN covers the team in that it's taken them this long to catch on. No big surprise there...
Furthermore, ESPN completely bastardized the article by Teicher, which said this: Quote:

I'm disappointed in Holmes' first game, but that's all it is at this point -- a poor first game and to base how a guy will play on that is foolish. Hell, let's be fair -- T-Rich had a nice day receiving (4 for 68), but he gained all of 3 yards on 6 carries. Do any of us expect him to have a 0.5 ypc on the ground when all is said and done? Didn't think so. Let's see how all this plays out. Calling Holmes a bust after one of the most poorly-played offensive games ever is ridiculous. We outta give the guy another week or two to prove himself. Maybe he will -- maybe he won't. |

Richardson led all AFC backs last year with 4.7 yards-per-touch on over 1,100 yds.

Holmes dropped that pass that would have given us a first down.

I agree this is a "non" story. Nothing new here. But, Holmes sure did stink up the house in week 1. Even beyond the dismal yards per carry average, what hurt to an even greater extent was one critical missed blocking assignment, one pathetic collision with Green in the backfield, and a critical dropped pass. Who knows what could have been, any one of these three plays could have shifted the momentum the other way.
Hoping for a better week for the priest. GO CHIEFS ! Jax R8R H8R |

Let's not get too focused on Holmes or any other single player. Both Waters (not focusing on snaps, btw) and Spears make Holmes' game look all-pro in comparison. Alexander looked at less than half speed and couldn't find the seam in a zone with a map and Snoop was just awful for 58 minutes. Trent Green looked like a QB in his first-ever opening day start until the last series of the game, making bad reads and clearly didn't have his characteristic accuracy.
I would imagine that's about as poor an offensive performance as we can expect this season, and it was a *team* effort in every sense of the word. Everybody was awful. I saw it another way, too. We were || this far off. Get a little better this week and the difference may be night and day, even against a better defensive team. A few blocks, a better thrown ball here and there and a few less drops and we're a completely different team. I was disappointed in the effort and in the lack of precision, but I see promise and I believe there are good things to come. |

A recurring theme I keep seeing on this board is how much lower Richardson's average yards per carry is than Holmes, even during the preseason....Since Richardson is almost always given the ball in any short yardage situations, that will always be true...
I was hoping that Priest Holmes would be a real improvement at RB, but honestly, TR still looks like the man to me, showing much more strength and comparable speed, and is a great receiver out of the backfield.... Last edited by mikey23545; 09-20-2001 at 08:55 PM.. |
