no chance we could roll back the rules
the NFL loves throwback shit, why not rules

Another league needs to do it first.. Rugby has no problems with the hits..

Which team scored the most points in a game in 2013?

QFMFT

If I'm going to quote anything for mother****ing TRUTH, it's the below. I'd rather live with field goals than the entire league running through 32 guys. I'd rather watch a game that can be won multiple ways than one without FGs.

That leaves us with the state of the modern NFL that is overly reliant on one player: the quarterback.

If you have a great, highly efficient QB, you’ll compete year after year. If you have a lousy, inefficient QB, you’re not going to win games. Simple as that.

In many ways, contemporary offenses are too efficient ... so there aren't as many cheap points being handed out in the modern game like there was back in the leather-helmet days and up through the high-risk passing wars of the 1960s.

The modern NFL is instead a robotic, monochromatic, boring brand of football that offers us fewer ways to win and fewer game-breaking plays in all phases of the sport: offense, defense and special teams.

Good news for certain QBs and the coaches lucky enough to have them; bad news for everybody else, including football fans.

I definitely agree that the NFL style of football is becoming robotic and bland. IMO, a big reason why college football has been steadily growing in popularity is because of the contrasts in styles between teams. You have the Big 12 and their love affair with the Air Raid, Georgia Tech's triple option, Boise State's unique take on the pro-style offense, Ohio State and Oregon's spread, Michigan State and Stanford's old-school smashmouth style, etc. all in the same sport. You don't really get that kind of variety in the NFL.

A 98 year old close family member is dying, probably today.

He played leather cap football in his day. He was good enough that he was recruited to go to high school before it was common, and then recruited to go another year after he was to graduate, specifically to play football in the early 30's. He didn't do that so that he could go work the family farm with his brothers. He was fast and from the stories could have gone on to play if he had wanted to do it.

He had teeth knocked out 3 times playing football and described it as a fist fight while you ran the ball. The lack of rules and enforcement must have made it quite the sight to see as a spectator.

Wish he still had his helmet but I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

Yep.

It's amazing how much interest the NFL garners when it's a league where there are only four teams in any given season who actually have a chance of bringing home a championship.

History proving you wrong about the number of teams having a chance may have something to do with it.

Hootie 02-25-2015 01:14 PM

I think the new trend of the NFL is for teams to skirt around the salary cap with their QB's, get them to take Tom Brady deals, and then hire a team of marketers to ensure these QB's get tons of local commercial and appearance deals to make up for their lost salary while circumventing the cap at the same time !

Patriots. Packers. Ravens. Whatever team Peyton Manning is on at the given time, so Denver. Next year you can probably add the Seahawks and the Colts to this list.

Those four, five or six teams have better than a coinflip's odds of making the conference final round every season.

The other 26-28 teams in the league aren't worth discussing in terms of championships.

I realize at this point Joe Flacco somehow transforms into a good QB in the postseason even though he is average - terrible the entire regular season ...

but the mere fact he depends on week 17 miracles every year to get into the playoffs is enough for me to continue to say, "Joe Flacco blows."

He just has never passed the eye test one time for me. It just doesn't make sense to me. Why is he so average in the regular season, even in big games ... but then plays his best ball in the playoffs? It's baffling.

Hootie 02-25-2015 01:20 PM

it took Chase Daniel to beat the Chargers for the Ravens to make the playoffs

this is like a year in and year out thing with the Ravens

The Steelers have won 2 SBs since 2004, with 1 as a #6 seed. The Giants have also won 2 SBs in recent years, with 1 as a #5 seed. That's 4 easy ones, right there. Your claim just doesn't hold water.
