It makes zero sense.

Teams tend to hire whoever is hot. The Athletic Football Show podcast was discussing Mahomes today (excellent listen, by the way) and they pointed out that in 2018, when Mahomes came into the league, defenses were largely Cover 1/Seattle Legion of Boom type defenses. Mahomes came out slinging the ball and shredding those defenses. Teams always look for franchise QBs but they particularly want the next Patrick Mahomes (see Murray, Kyler, as an example. Didn't work but that's exactly what AZ wanted).

Defenses changed, in large part as a response to Mahomes and the QBs that followed him, like Tua, Burrow, and Allen. The offensive statistics are down this year as part of the ebb and flow of the game. And because the offensive statistics are down, defensive coordinators are the ones that are hot.

Give it a year or two. Offenses will respond to what defenses do and offensive production will go up. Offensive coordinators will get hot. They'll be the ones hired for HC vacancies.

Yea, but he didn't seem to be any team's top choice, or even plan b. It makes no sense.

did anyone even know of this guys existence before stroud? he’s been an OC for one season. that would be a monster jump.

But that doesn't explain a guy like Slowik not getting a job while all of these defensive guys do.

I mean it's a fair question, Ben Johnson didn't get one because he apparently made outrageous money demands.

Because the rules favor offense and it's easier than ever to find quality offensive coaches and Bob Slowik Jr proves that. Mike Kafka proved it last year with Daniel Jones.

The Andy Reid and Mike Shannahan trees run this league offensively and they're so vast now that you can probably get your defensive coach and have your pick of a smart up and comer to be your OC.

Klint Kubiak, Eric Bieniemy, Luke Getsy, Jason Vrabel and I think even Ken Dorsey would be good.

Lots and lots of good offensive coaches from good schemes out there

Completely disagree.

If your OC is any good, he'll be gone in 2-3 years max, and then you're right back at square one.

In Seattle’s case, I think Pete Carroll had major input on the hiring decision and will continue to have input on the team. We know Pete is a defense guy all the way.

That and offensive output was down.

He’s a great hire. Especially for that franchise. Now they need to acquire Fields and make life hell for the 49ers. That division is going to be tough.

Seattle also likely views having a top 5 defense as their quickest way to consistent contention because they aren't in position for a franchise QB.

Was it just a money demand? If he demanded full control of personnel like Belichick, that might be part of the problem.

The Chiefs history is that our four best Head Coaches in the franchise were good because they know how to run a football team. Stram and Reid were innovative and creative with play design, and that helped them. But their best quality was that they had a plan for the big picture.

Schottenheimer and Vermeil were very good at getting buy in to work hard and play tough, but they were not genius football savants.

It is funny to see these teams hire an OC or DC whose unit had a good year as if that is some recipe.

The best head coaches are the ones who put some thought into how to best run training camp and practice and how to manage their coaches so that the players achieve to their potential.

Funny how Chiefs kick all this ass, and Nagy winning coach of the year, makes it so nobody wants to hire off Andy Reid's staff.

BB gonna sit out a year now?

Wallcrawler 01-31-2024 02:11 PM

He knew the Ravens were never winning with Lamar. Head to the NFC.

I could see Belichick landing in Buffalo if McDermott fails to make it to the conference title game. McDermott’s seat is not ice cold. I don’t think he can afford yet another early loss in the Playoffs. That would be 4 years in a row getting knocked out early.
