Chan Gailey Relieved of Duties as Chiefs Offensive Coordinator
Aug 31, 2009, 10:30:29 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that Chan Gailey has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. Gailey’s status with the club will be addressed by head coach Todd Haley following the conclusion of today’s practice. Gailey originally joined the Chiefs in 2008. He came to Kansas City after a six-year stint as head coach at Georgia Tech (2002-07).

Yep. I think it is a great move because honestly Chan is a horrible OC and has sucked every where he has been. Haley should start taking over offense and work his magic.

Sure-Oz 08-31-2009 09:44 AM

Haley should definetly go out there and help block and call plays

This is a really strange move two weeks before the opener. We knew Haley was a hot head I guess, hope it works out for the best. There must have been some real issues between these two over the last couple days.

I bet he initially thought Chan was a Chinese name and he was initially afraid to fire him for legal reasons. Last week in the coach's meeting he finally figured it out.

I don't think there's much doubt that while they might hire an OC or promote Carthon, Haley's going to be calling the plays. It's kind of like when I'm watching my son play Madden in a big game and while I watch him call runs on 3rd and 10 I just grab the controller and take over.

I'm betting it will be in title only. Hailey will call the plays.

tooge 08-31-2009 09:48 AM

They want to rebuild this thing their way. Not some shotgun offense, Tyler Thigpen running around, botched play offense. Chan runs an offense they dont want, plain and simple. This certainly cant bode well for Thiggy. I expect the chiefs to try to pick up O'Connell from the waiver wire. I think Pioli likes Cassel, Gutierrez, and then Brokie if he has to, otherwisw, O'connell. Chan may have simply not been in agreement with the head brass. Thus, out a here. That's how I see it.

Under Carthon, the Browns had managed a league-low 232 points in 2005 and had only scored 88 points through six games in 2006. Carthon was the third NFL offensive coordinator to be fired during the 2006 season. Fans -- obviously fed up with Carthon -- started the "Mo's Gotta Go" movement in October 2006. A website www.firemauricecarthon.com was created to express some fans' displeasure."

Nzoner 08-31-2009 09:49 AM

Not that this will change anything but that opener in Baltimore is going to be U-G-L-Y,maybe Haley should just let the whole 2nd squad start.

kregger 08-31-2009 09:50 AM

It's all Mike Cox's fault. Chan's guy just cost us the franchise QB. See ya later Mike.

Another thing this tells me is Croyle could be our starter for the Ravens game. Thigpen heavily relied on Gailey's adapting to his style of play. With Gailey out and Thigpen still struggling under center in dropback plays, it all points to Croyle being our #2 and Thigpen in deep shit.

Gailey did offset some of Herm's sucktitude, but I don't think he was a miracle worker.

I do think that Chan is superior to Haley doing both and Carthon doing...anything. We'll see.

I'm not too high on the move. If there were irreconcilable differences, they should have been addressed earlier.

Minus a broken jaw (the Faid still crack me up!), I don't really see anything that they couldn't have found earlier.

It didn't take long for Haley to realize he's sitting on one of the most talent-starved rosters in the league. He's been unhappy with his quarterbacks and receivers and plans to lean more heavily on the running game. We still think the Chiefs will pass quite a bit, but this is an offense to avoid in fantasy leagues."

And Herm said the roster was 85% complete...ROFL

Mr_Tomahawk 08-31-2009 10:03 AM

...maybe averaging one TD a game wasn't enough? :hmmm:

soundmind 08-31-2009 10:04 AM

Well, I was a bit surprised by this one. I thought they were just going to weather the season with staff as-is....but I have to admit, this is kind of awesome. I'm actually impressed that they have the mind to change what isn't working. Is it Chan's fault necessarily? No. Could he possibly help this team more from another position right now? Maybe. But 33 points in 3 games isn't the reason this happened, it's the preseason and the OLine sucks. My guess is they realized that the offense was worse than they thought (specifically the line). And instead of letting it fester, they made a broad stroke move.....I like it.

Firing your OC two weeks before the start of the season when the two apparent candidates for playcalling are Carthon and a rookie head coach, doesn't seem to be the wisest move.
