The reason it's a big deal is teams don't fire coaches 2 weeks before the season, it just doesn't make much sense.
If he didn't want him he should have said he wouldn't take the job if Gailey was forced on him, when past coaches had assistants forced on them people said they were pussies and idiots for taking that. |

Why's Haley get a break if he did the same thing? |

Clark Hunt was on the hook for $1 million dollars plus to Chan Gailey. I'm positive that there were discussions with both Haley & Pioli about their ability and willingness to work with Gailey. Haley was likely asked to at least give it a go with Gailey, for the sake of Hunt's pocketbook but was also likely to have the option of final say. Haley gave it a go and it wasn't working for him. End of story. |

I'd say the fact that Gailey just got fired may be an indication that he might not have been forced on Haley to start with.

At least Pioli and Hunt were amendable to the possibility of doing anything to help their HC be successful. |

Well if you think back Clark was consistently overly complimentary of Herm and Gailey which could have easily had alot to do with how much money he still owed them...
