A by-product of picking last or near last every year. You cant hit on every draft pick or FA signing.

Is your point that Veach is overated or something? I'm sticking with in Veach we trust.

I think Veach is doing a really good job.

Heard this on the Time's Ours podcast.

The two biggest cap hits at the LB for the 2022 Chiefs are:
  1. Anthony Hitchens
  2. Jermaine Carter
Truly an impressive display of epically screwing up LB free agents while absolutely crushing it in the draft.

Another factoid from the podcast: the Chiefs have drafted 28 players since 2019. 24 of them (including Niang on PUP) are on the formal roster, 2 of them (Nazeeh and Powell) are on the PS, and only two: Darwin and BoPete are no longer with the team. So Veach can fill a damn roster.

However, correct me if I'm wrong, though: he has yet to draft a Pro Bowler. (Creed at the very least deserved it, but the fact remains.)

Best 6M we have ever spent!

Maybe Google DVOA?

Defense-adjusted Value Over Average.

The “Defense” part means opponent, not specifically defense. It means that the quality of the opponent is taken into account. DVOA is used to measure both the offense and defense.

I did sign up for a Football Outsiders account to check, and in 2021 Denver had a lower (better) defensive DVOA than KC. It is amazing how many Chiefs fans will try to pile on for an argument in which they are clearly wrong. I mean seriously, do you all think that KC had a better defense when they allowed more points, more yards, and more yards per play?

in other news, it took 3 years for Veach to turn this linebacker unit from PUKE to biggest strength. All with draft picks, Chenal is going to compete for DROY watch. I bet he starts and does some great things.

Oops yeah I thought he was citing defensive DVOA. My bad. And no I wasn't arguing and wouldn't argue that the Chiefs defense was better last year.

He seems nice but that's asking a lot from a guy who won't even see the the field in nickel packages.

We should not blame Brett Veach for either LB's performance.

Anthony Hitchens was a 4th round Dallas Cowboy draft pick out of Iowa. When we signed Anthony, he was a 26-year-old, that had averaged 76 tackles per season playing for the Cowboys. His first year with KC he had 135 tackles. Hitchens had a reputation as a hard-hitting football player around the league. You have to pay money for good football players and that is what Brett did to acquire Hitchens.

In the last 2 to 3 seasons Anthony Hitchens became less concerned about tackling and was more about self-preservation. After a number of collisions it happens to some of the best players.

I wish it had a happier ending, but it did not.

I don't think that the Jermaine Carter that we saw this preseason was the same LB that people saw last year for Carolina. He was two steps slow and never seemed to have the desire to be playing football.

It cost us $1.77M but Brett and Andy knew that Carter was not ready to play here. The Chiefs moved on and that is a sign of good management.

I don't think this is too far off.

Haven't we learned by now that the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest that doesn't matter?

Your first sentence could not be more correct.

Your second sentence is asinine. Chenal probably plays no more than 50% of the snaps this year, assuming no major injuries.

I think we should have probably foreseen that Hitchens was not an excellent fit in this system. The system he played in in Dallas was much different than Sutton's 3-4.

I don't disagree that you had to pay big money, but the contract we signed had no outs for years. We put our eggs in that basket and it absolutely did not work -- though we did win a Super Bowl managing him.

His tackles were Donnie Edwards tackles. He rarely did effective run fits and usually wondered behind the LOS and let the blockers get to him. Sutton's system was a bad fit.

And then Spags came on and mitigated the damage some for a couple of years.

Nevertheless, Veach made up for this really bad signing by shattering the draft at LB. He's made three high-round investments at LB and by the end of the year it may end up being a Top 3 unit -- I'm not kidding.

So, anyway. I thought the stat in the OP was really wow.
