We dont have enough ready made guys to compete. If you AREN'T worried about the fans or if your downtown stadium gets through you should absolutely consider trading the valuable pieces and start over. This team is going nowhere.

You re-stock it by being better as a front office...

By trading Scott Barlow and getting a good return (which should be Chapman+)

By trading Salvador Perez to the Marlins and getting a nice haul in return

By trading Nicky Lopez and getting something decent

By developing better in the minors. Without that, it wouldn't matter what they got back for Witt if trading him in the offseason.

In reality you should be able to move Oliveras for a lottery ticket also, he's a solid bench player for a contending team.

It's about 5 runs of defensive value at 2B or 3B vs. SS. At least according to Fangraphs. I don't know how bRef calculates the core defensive value of each position.

2B and 3B are equally valuable defensively. Are you just looking at it from the lens of the power production you usually see at the position? If he's not playing SS, it doesn't really matter where he's playing if he's a guy you want to build with.

You can win a WS with a Chone Figgins type at 3B.

Does that metric need recalibrated after the removal of the extreme shift though? Genuinely asking, not sure.

I'd prefer a guy with a better bat at 3rd if you are gonna have the piles of garbage in the OF this team has...

Another thing can this team just admit that MJ Melendez is not an OFer, he's brutal out there.

It's possible, though I think it's from pre-shift days.

Melendez has been rough in the OF. Has the tools to be good, but is not.

The Royals would have to get better in the OF and at 2B to make Garcia work well at 3B, sure. I think that's actually the easiest position to upgrade. And is the offense or the setup of the team changed at all if Witt is playing SS instead of 3B, with the lighter-hitting guy who would play SS playing 3B instead?

I want to see some combination of Witt-Garcia-Loftin at 3B, SS, and 2B next year. I don't really care what that combination is.

In the OF, I'd look for a FA or trade acquisition to move things forward.

Cody Bellinger seems to have fixed the things wrong with him. That's someone I'd pursue in FA as a potential CF option that adds lefty power to the lineup. We'll see what Waters can be over the rest of the year, though the slow start isn't great.

I kind of look at corner OF as the easiest spot to find solutions at in baseball.

Demonpenz 07-17-2023 12:47 PM

Melendez has been disappointing. He looked like a world beater for awhile.

ChiefsCountry 07-17-2023 12:53 PM

Witt at SS and Garcia at 2nd long term would be the best for this team. That's strong defense up the middle.

But if you do that you give up on Massey and are probably deciding that Loftin is a super sub.

ChiefsCountry 07-17-2023 12:59 PM

Here is a captain hindsight question though:

Would you still have traded Andrew Benintendi or gave him the same contract the White Sox did?

That's a lot of money for basically a singles hitter that plays good D.

I saw something today about him adjusting his hand position over the all star break. He's got them a little farther away from his body. The swing looked better over this series, so we'll see.

At this point it's time to just admit he's a catcher and work with him to be at least decent at it...I can't help but think all the jacking him around with positions is affecting his offense.

Lets sign Kila Kaihuee and Ken Harvey. Finnegan throwing smoke for the TBones and have Gore steal bases.

Tonight was great. Walked right in. Bought a ticket. No wait. Sit wherever I want on RF or LF line. Like the good ole days. If they lose enough $40 parking may get down to $10

Singles at leadoff spot means runner on base for Witt and Salvy to hit home.

How many runs from shit defense has cost the team from the left field position?

If the team was good ok, but they aren't a Benintendi away, they'd have done better to sign some legit starting pitching.

Like I was saying the other day... they went underslot at 8 to be able to grab Dickey and Wolters. They better be right on at least 2 of those guys for this to be an acceptable approach. Going to have to prove it is rather than get the benefit of the doubt, because of how poorly they've drafted of late.

I don't think cumulative runs across MLB had been that high since 1894 or something like that. Read it somewhere.

it seems like sometimes he goes for grounders too far to his right and then is out of position
He has made some plays the last couple of days though...very aggressive in the field
He is just holding it down for Vinnie, anyways

tk13 07-20-2023 04:22 PM

I'm just completely skeptical. Not just because Salvy has control over being traded but all we've heard for years is how Salvy is overrated, pitch framing, doesn't walk, etc. and he has a massive contract on top of it.

The Royals are going to value him more over literally every other team. This almost 100% feels like a trade where you'd get some decent prospects but probably midrange guys, maybe a top 100 player if you're very lucky, and now you've traded your best player for lottery tickets and the fans are more angry than ever.

No good player really has any value for a team that cant possibly compete for years. Anyone of any value that isnt young should be traded.

I also always wondered why bad teams even have closers. They literally have no value. Actually they have negative value because you don't WANT to win the close games.

The Royals are going to value him more over literally every other team. This almost 100% feels like a trade where you'd get some decent prospects but probably midrange guys, maybe a top 100 player if you're very lucky, and now you've traded your best player for lottery tickets and the fans are more angry than ever.

Miami seems to be the only team where I could see a trade for Salvy working out.

Trading the most popular Royals player of all time not named George Brett at a time when trying for a new stadium and being perceived as cheap already. Damn you have to win that one.

Right. I don't think there's a return thats even feasibly possible that wouldn't be a PR nightmare.

It was the type of trade that would get SD's GM fired if they didn't win...Dylan Lesko was part of the package.
