This is where scouts and your information team come into play.

Merrill Kelly was signed for two years, $5.5 million by the Diamondbacks out of the KBO. There are ways to get creative and find potential gems from the scrapheap.

Oh no question, but your hit rate on those is like 25% so your bargain signings are gonna need to come in a bundle and you'd better be willing to write off a large portion of them.

You just can't sign a guy like Kelly and think "There we go; 200 innings of 3.25 ERA..."

You sign 4 guys like Kelly and think "Okay, I might get a 5th starter and a swing reliever out of that lot" and hope you beat that.

Makes sense. We show up for baseball...not just for the coastal match up. KC loves the Chiefs, but remains a strong baseball town.

It depends on the organization making the move and thought process behind it though.

Some bargain moves have very little upside above the floor, that are a complete waste of money. If the Royals signed Corey Kluber for $3 million plus incentives, I would rip the move from the start. That's not the type of bargain move I am advocating for.

You know when you see them, like Robert Suarez signing with the Padres a couple of years ago. Merrill Kelly was realistically supposed to be fifth starter/swing man, but it was one of those moves that got the Fangraphs/Baseball Prospectus sites talking because it was intriguing and people saw upside in Kelly.

Before the 2020 season, the Giants signed Kevin Gausman for one year, $9 million. He had a higher ceiling and now he's a perennial Cy Young candidate. Those are the moves I want the Royals to make, not paying for an obvious shit pitcher who is a lost cause like Madison Bumgarner.

ChiefsCountry 11-03-2023 10:27 AM

I wonder if the Royals will kick the tires on Frankie Montas again. He could be a buy low, boom type now.

I agree. I haven't seen them throw numbers at the problem really - and you need to. I mean there isn't a lot of great options this off season FA wise... I could be talked into a Seth Lugo type, because he's versatile... but it's really a thin market. I would imagine they ship out a young guy or two for some arms.

tk13 11-03-2023 01:31 PM

Haven't seen anyone mention it but I did notice the Royals put out the promotions for next year's schedule. Definitely a lot of things to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 2014.

Most interesting thing is unless I missed something there are no bobbleheads or any kind of items that involve Salvy. Leaving that door open to trade him I imagine.

dallaschiefsfan 11-03-2023 04:22 PM

What are the goals for 2024? Are we talking about a Gil Meche type signing goal? Or is it more along the lines of a James Shields trade? Or perhaps a Volquez type signing? What are we trying to do? The answer to that question will limit us on what pitchers we look into.

I think the Ervin Santana and Jeremy Guthrie type route would be my guess. Or that would be the direction I would go towards. Look at teams shedding payroll or a project. Just some average starting pitching would do wonders for this team.

I can get on board with that. While our bullpen is different from back then, I am encouraged by signs that we are about 2-3 years behind the Rangers run, just like last time. A Santana and Guthrie type would be golden for moving forward.

One guy that could be a sleeper is Erick Fedde, who won the KBO's equivalent of the Cy Young. He's a former top prospect with the Washington Nationals, so he checks off the talent box, too.

You're not missing something. He's replacing a future Hall of Fame manager and yes, he's unproven as possible even though Vogt had a good reputation for being a savvy clubhouse guy while playing.

I feel pretty bad for the guy. We really should get Rabble in here to give us all advice on Bauer's situation.

Nevermind saw the other allegations lol. I like that in his video he acts like he's never been through an initial restraining order hearing, but according to the other reports he has been through those previously.

Brewers are open for business. I think I would see if I could get Brandon Woodruff from them. His value is low with the shoulder injury to miss most of this season and with him hitting free agency. I think he would be a solid buy low project.

nychief 11-10-2023 07:02 AM

Saw the Canha news, we must not have offered much... they gave him away.

I like that they are looking at OBP... because its 2023 and we should have been doing so for 20 years...but alas Royals.

Just goes to show how ****ing stupid the tiktok generation is. A video, a self recorded video from the "victim," can come out of a chick willingly laying in bed, smiling, next to a man that is sleeping that she supposedly had to sneak out of the house to get away from because he brutally beat her unconscious. Yet, if you threw up a poll, 80% would still side with her, and I might be selling it short.

She deserves that beating from the next man she ****s.

We have been, without a doubt, astoundingly dog shit in the drafting and development department. It's why there are no easy solutions to our problems, the guys we were counting on to step up have not (save BWJ and maybe Vinny - but who knows - lets not even talk about the pitching), and the farm system is by all metrics....trash. Would be great to have some money to spend to staunch the bleeding...but I'm not hopefull.

Thanks Mike Matheny for ruining the bullpen. You did a good job of destroying all the young good bullpen arms, so you could win a few more games!

The Star building makes a lot of sense if they can get enough land. Make One Electric is the family that owns the Star Building now. They are also a Royals sponsor. They have a sign on one of the fences.

I think the city would be like that site more.

I knew Geddy Lee was a huge baseball fan, but didn't realize he has such a massive collection.

Christie's is holding an auction for some of his memorabilia.

I watched the Star building get built from my apartment. Sure as shit doesn't feel like 20 years ago.

And a stadium there would be a really tight fit.

Sassy Squatch 11-16-2023 08:31 AM

The incompetence of everyone involved aside, that actually seems like the most logical spot to me, assuming they can figure out how to squeeze a stadium in.

Royals will never go for that site. They want a site where they can force the city to build them their own entertainment district and capture a piece of the related revenue year round. Being next to the P&L District won't let the Royals get those $$$.

Fansy the Famous Bard 11-16-2023 10:21 AM

The KC Star location is more than likely a "due diligence" inclusion so they can also say "see this other location is the most perfectest location for the perfect stadium." *wink wink* come final decision time.

Or they've come to the realization that trying to push their concepts with their own entertainment district are coming up bunk so they're pivoting

They could be willing to pivot on many aspects, but the ability to make money year round, especially when baseball is not being played, is not one of the things they will concede on. This isn't their concept. This is the industry norm now.

The new stadiums of the late 90s/00s were about adding more luxury suites and higher in game revenue streams within the stadium. Now that that revenue stream is maxed out, it's the entertainment around the stadium that is required for ownership to make more money and sell the team for a massive profit. They will threaten to move before they allow this not to happen.

Yup, everybody is using the Brave's model...

ChiefsCountry 11-16-2023 01:34 PM

I don't know if the Royals are really building a pure entertainment district ala Power & Light on the East Village site according to their site plans they put out earlier. Seemed like there they were going to put in an office building and condos. North Kansas City they would be putting in a lot more but that really seems to be a fall back plan.

Okay. Let them move.

tk13 11-16-2023 01:46 PM

The interesting part to me is what the Chiefs think. They probably have more power than any team in the country right now and could ask for whatever they want. You know the Royals and Chiefs are talking about all this stuff but they don't go in on this together. Guessing they think that's too big of an ask?

Part of me wonders if they pitched this whole thing as "Move Royals here and do X, Y, Z to Arrowhead" it would be a slam dunk. Maybe they're just waiting to see what the Royals do and then build their ask around that. But you know it's coming, the Chiefs are going to ask for money soon and they're part of this process. But the Royals are taking the full-on lead in the community.

Sassy Squatch 11-16-2023 01:48 PM

The Royals can collectively lick the underside of our jizz tubes. Clark Hunt can ask for the moon and he'll probably get it, and I sure hope he doesn't let this Skinflint Dipshit Sherman tag along on his nuts.

I think you got this right. The Chiefs know exactly what they want to do, and Step 1 involves the Royals moving so they can make use of all that space and finally develop the area around there into something.

Pablo 11-16-2023 03:18 PM

The royals can move to the TBones park at the Legends. Might fill that one up

KCUnited 11-16-2023 03:49 PM

If entertainment districts matched team performance then the Royals might be good staying put next to Taco Bell, Denny's and The Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Royals taking on the arrows politically since replacing the stadiums are tricky situation and the Chiefs come in to get in passed.

Sassy Squatch 11-16-2023 04:21 PM

Wut? These situations have next to nothing to do with each other outside of the fact they currently share the same complex. The Chiefs are currently one of the top organizations in the most popular sport in the United States. The Royals by comparison are a bottom tier organization in a sport that's stagnating at best. If/when the Chiefs actually gets serious about a potential new stadium, there will be a mad scramble by every potential location the Chiefs float to give Hunt money hand over fist to put the new stadium and surrounding entertainment district there.

Sassy Squatch 11-16-2023 04:25 PM

Hell, the only thing that MAY save Sherman is if Mahomes becomes a public face for the effort since he's got money in the Royals

Bummer has a good reputation for being a high-leverage lefty and ground ball pitcher, but that's quite the haul in quantity for a guy who had a 6.79 ERA last year.
