You just can't sign a guy like Kelly and think "There we go; 200 innings of 3.25 ERA..." You sign 4 guys like Kelly and think "Okay, I might get a 5th starter and a swing reliever out of that lot" and hope you beat that. |

Some bargain moves have very little upside above the floor, that are a complete waste of money. If the Royals signed Corey Kluber for $3 million plus incentives, I would rip the move from the start. That's not the type of bargain move I am advocating for. You know when you see them, like Robert Suarez signing with the Padres a couple of years ago. Merrill Kelly was realistically supposed to be fifth starter/swing man, but it was one of those moves that got the Fangraphs/Baseball Prospectus sites talking because it was intriguing and people saw upside in Kelly. Before the 2020 season, the Giants signed Kevin Gausman for one year, $9 million. He had a higher ceiling and now he's a perennial Cy Young candidate. Those are the moves I want the Royals to make, not paying for an obvious shit pitcher who is a lost cause like Madison Bumgarner. |
I wonder if the Royals will kick the tires on Frankie Montas again. He could be a buy low, boom type now.
|
Quote:
I agree. I haven't seen them throw numbers at the problem really - and you need to. I mean there isn't a lot of great options this off season FA wise... I could be talked into a Seth Lugo type, because he's versatile... but it's really a thin market. I would imagine they ship out a young guy or two for some arms. |
Haven't seen anyone mention it but I did notice the Royals put out the promotions for next year's schedule. Definitely a lot of things to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 2014.
Most interesting thing is unless I missed something there are no bobbleheads or any kind of items that involve Salvy. Leaving that door open to trade him I imagine. |
What are the goals for 2024? Are we talking about a Gil Meche type signing goal? Or is it more along the lines of a James Shields trade? Or perhaps a Volquez type signing? What are we trying to do? The answer to that question will limit us on what pitchers we look into.

I watched the Star building get built from my apartment. Sure as shit doesn't feel like 20 years ago.
And a stadium there would be a really tight fit. |
The incompetence of everyone involved aside, that actually seems like the most logical spot to me, assuming they can figure out how to squeeze a stadium in.

The new stadiums of the late 90s/00s were about adding more luxury suites and higher in game revenue streams within the stadium. Now that that revenue stream is maxed out, it's the entertainment around the stadium that is required for ownership to make more money and sell the team for a massive profit. They will threaten to move before they allow this not to happen. |

Yup, everybody is using the Brave's model... |
I don't know if the Royals are really building a pure entertainment district ala Power & Light on the East Village site according to their site plans they put out earlier. Seemed like there they were going to put in an office building and condos. North Kansas City they would be putting in a lot more but that really seems to be a fall back plan.

The interesting part to me is what the Chiefs think. They probably have more power than any team in the country right now and could ask for whatever they want. You know the Royals and Chiefs are talking about all this stuff but they don't go in on this together. Guessing they think that's too big of an ask?
Part of me wonders if they pitched this whole thing as "Move Royals here and do X, Y, Z to Arrowhead" it would be a slam dunk. Maybe they're just waiting to see what the Royals do and then build their ask around that. But you know it's coming, the Chiefs are going to ask for money soon and they're part of this process. But the Royals are taking the full-on lead in the community. |
The Royals can collectively lick the underside of our jizz tubes. Clark Hunt can ask for the moon and he'll probably get it, and I sure hope he doesn't let this Skinflint Dipshit Sherman tag along on his nuts.

Wut? These situations have next to nothing to do with each other outside of the fact they currently share the same complex. The Chiefs are currently one of the top organizations in the most popular sport in the United States. The Royals by comparison are a bottom tier organization in a sport that's stagnating at best. If/when the Chiefs actually gets serious about a potential new stadium, there will be a mad scramble by every potential location the Chiefs float to give Hunt money hand over fist to put the new stadium and surrounding entertainment district there.
|
Hell, the only thing that MAY save Sherman is if Mahomes becomes a public face for the effort since he's got money in the Royals

Bummer has a good reputation for being a high-leverage lefty and ground ball pitcher, but that's quite the haul in quantity for a guy who had a 6.79 ERA last year.
